The "Scale" tampering is a cop out. That's weak.. The scale was fine for the defending champion Michael Spinks, but off for a bloated Eddie M. Muhammad.?.? HMMM!! I'm sorry, but I can't digest that notion at all... Scales for a title fight should be calibrated by an authorized official and double checked by the commission.... Eddie was known to be porky in the girth area.... Spinks was ALWAYS slender...MRBILL

No doubt about EMMs shape however it wasnt claimed it was tampered with it was proven to be inaccurate, by an impartial third party. Yes scales should be calibrated but these ones werent and the commision even admitted this

    EXTRA:

That same day the commission was willing to waive the weight issue and go with a non-title 10 rounder, but Spinks' people said "NO!" At any rate, I was pissed...

Cant agree more. A tit for tat response I think. Personally I think Spinks would have won anyway.

Spinks would have won another decision over Qawi.

I thought it was about as dominant a technical masterclass as they come. Spinks boxed beautifully. The only thing I disagree with regarding most people's opinions of the fight is that it was boring. Then again I was pretty much just in awe of what Spinks was doing. He was always awkward, but he had some excellent technical skills. The slight dip of the head to the left after throwing the jab to off-set Qawi's counter jab was brilliant, and worked perfectly every time.

I agree with this assessment. Spinks threw a ton of jabs but also was throwing his share of heavy left hooks/uppercuts and right hands. People who were bored by this fight were probably pulling heavily for Qawi. Qawi was unable to get off as the fight wore on due to the brilliant efforts of Spinks.

Anyone wanting to see the right kind of offensive style totake the play away against a steady pressure fighter or swarmer should watch this and the Lionel Rose harada fight.

I think maybe the backlash against the fight also had to do with the way Qawi had been painted as some kind of viscious Joe Frazier like badass a bit too early, no doubt helped by the savage grin he always had as picked fighters apart. It turned out he didn't really have that kind of intensity or pace about his work.He was more of a methodical and very technical pressure fighter, relying on good foot-placement and top -notch upperbody movement to get his shots off.His feet were about as quick as Khaosai Galaxy's and i think someone like a young Duran, Chang or harada would have fared better, fighters that could take a shot or slip and then close right on top of you in seconds.Qawi too often ended up just planting himself and trying to slip everything, which only allowed Spinks to keep the initiative.

Mantequilla, can you think of a LH who was good enough to do what you describe to Spinks? I guess we could speculate Harry Greb but I mean someone on Film? I tend to think Tiger didn't have the footspeed.

On a side note, I like the Rose/Harada analogy. I watch the Jofre/Harada fights and feel that Jofre could've won both of those fights had he employed a similar strategy and made Harada pay a heavier price coming in. Jofre seemed to want to lean in and initiate more than he needed to IMO.

Michael probably would have beaten Dwight by a larger margin.

I am a huge Qawi phan (shoot camden is really PHILLY just seperated by a river), but don't see him being able to do much more against Spinks in a rematch. Spinks fought a beautiful style against Qawi and don't what Braxton could have done any differently to prevent it.
