Well, Mike's legs were usually all over the shop early on so Shavers, like a few big heavyweight hitters, has a solid punchers chance in the first round. But only Tyson, war more dynamic, and with a dig in both fists, finished Mike, and one that'd been out a while at that. Could Shavers win? Of course! But a reasoned pick using the formbook? Spinks decision or accumulation stoppage.
Spinks outboxes Shavers over the distance. Mind you,I say this with not too much confidence. If Shavers catches Spinks with a big right hand,it's all over.
It depends on the footwork of Spinks. If his legs are there, he sure won't make for a standing target in there. I think his herky jerky movements are enough for Earnie to be off balance and missing though. The longer it goes, the worse it is for Shavers and I think he ends up losing a wide decision because he cannot catch the guy & Spinks just is not going to cooperate with the Shaver's style the way his brother would have. Completely different results in that one.
Spinks by decision if he dosent get caught by the right obviously I can't see him getting hit full force, i'd think UD or late KO for Spinks
The shavers who gave Ali hell would beat Spinks up. I think Spinks losing to Tyson is an indication of how good mike was not how weak Michael was but in this case I don't think shavers finishing skills will be an issue. If he lands he wins for me.
Spinks had the skill to outpoint Earnie but if he get caught well it could end...a careful fight and Spinks could get the win but with one punch Earnie could change things
I believe the 77-79 (Ali-Holmes II) version would be able to catch him and would be surprised to see Spinks finnish this fight.
Hmmm...I wonder? I can envision perhaps Foreman/Liston/Dempsey types intimidating him. Tyson was a whole nother animal. I think he would have respect for Shavers power, after all he did drop Holmes in thier fight, and that is IMHO a vastly superior Holmes to the one that Spinks edged. Spinks could outpoint him, I don't see Shavers taking this on the cards....but sooner or later my bet (good thing I am not a betting man) is that Shavers stops him around 9 or so.
I'm surprised so many people pick Spinks. He was a more talented fighter than Shavers but was also lucky as a heavyweight. He caught Holmes at the right time when Holmes was near the end. He beat up a huge punching bag in Cooney, who had nothing left for that fight but what other heavyweight did he beat? Shavers was all over the place as far as his performances, sometimes looking great, sometimes bad. But he was a natural, strong as hell heavyweight with am awesome punch. Frankly, I think Spinks would be intimidated by the man. I wouldn't be surprised to see a repeat of Shavers-Ellis or Shavers-Norton here. If not the 1st round, Shavers takes him out within 5.
