Just watched the fight and thought it was an excellent battle. I felt it was a great performance by Davis, his defense was superb and he really made Spinks look bad in the later rounds with his wild swinging misses. Also thought he showed great ring generalship, walking Spinks down and nailing him to the body and head.

That said, Spinks was landing the heavier blows, which no doubt influenced the judges and gave him the win. I have no problem with that, even though I had Davis edging it 115-114. (Spinks winning rounds 3,5,6,7 and 10. Davis winning rounds 1,4,8,9,11 and 12. Round 2 being even.) Spinks has a decent argument for winning the fight given that a few rounds I scored for Davis could have been scored for Spinks without it being unreasonable.

My beef though is with Joe Cortez's and Larry Hazzard's scorecards. Hazzard had the fight 118-111 and Cortez had it 119-109. I just have to ask: WTF were they watching? HORRIBLE, HORRIBLE scorecards. :patsch There's no way Spinks won the fight by scores that wide. Might be academic at the end of the day if you felt Spinks deserved the win, but to me, that's inexcusable.

Yeah, it was one of those fights that could easily have gone either way. And the scorecards were ridiculous.

Back in the day...I had Spinks barely. I remember being surprised at how good the fight was...After it I remember Qawi at ringside shouting at Spinks for a rematch. I'll have to look it again sometime soon. It was a good fight at light heavyweight.

I don't know about Cortez, but there was already a protest even before the fight from Davis about Hazzard as a judge. Something to do with a bit of a long-term grudge between Hazzard and Davis's manager, Dennis Rappaport.

I'm glad many had reasonable scorecards.

It's much easier to believe that than to think that he dulled out a card like that in good conscience, that's for sure. Sad when politics gets in the way of a fight isn't it? :-(

Eddie Davis was a very fine fighter. His brother John was also a good fighter at LHW.

I think Eddie put up a great performance against an ATG like Spinks.

A very competitive fight. A win either way is not unreasonable.

If memory serves me right Spinks took the final two stanza's, and in reality he needed to.

Why this was a scheduled 12 rounder, I"ll never know, but it was probably a big mistake on Michael's part.

Great writeup. Watched the fight a couple days ago. Didn't score carefully but I had Spinks winning by a point or two, and there were enough close rounds that the fight could have gone either way. Cortez and Hazzard's scorecards were shockingly bad.

Cortez and Hazard were refs moonlighting as judges. Having one or the other and two experienced judges would have been normal procedure but to have both judge the same important title fight smells of incompetence at best and corruption, at worst, by the New Jersey SAC.

And Spinks did agree to a Qwai rematch. It was scheduled and was set to air in syndication. But, Dwight couldnt make 175 and begged off citing a shoulder injury.

Eddie Davis nearly pulled off a huge upset. Good fighter who always seemed to come up short in the big fights, but this one was a lot closer than anyone expected. His only losses were to great fighters (Spinks, Qawi, and Johnson) and LaLonde in Davis's final fight. His loss to Pete McIntyre was the only one he really should have won...although McIntyre was a better fighter than his record suggests.

I can reasonably see any scores ranging from Spinks by a point or two, or even, or Davis by a point. Judge Castellano was the only one of the judges actually watching the fight apparently.
