Eddie Davis fight against Spinks at LHW was very controversial and many
felt Davis was hard done . Machen had a similar spoiler style and underrated
skills .Machen piles on pts with his counter jab and crafty boxing.
No controversial here. Machen on pts.

For me this is an easy pick. I saw Machen fight a lot during his career. He tended to come up short against top competition.

    Spinks is my pick.

Johnson is one of the most underrated and under appreciated fighters of all time; that's no knock on Eddie's resume! Notwithstanding eras (1960 Jinx vs. 1985 Machen?). Eddie UD....Gregory was a better fighter than Spinks, oops, did I say that already!

Johnson is an ATG LHW. So is Spinks, but at HW, the extra size advantage with his skill and the extra weight behind his punch, which at LHW was 1 of the best ever. Johnson would give Spinks a hell of a fight and could very well beat him.

However, even if Spinks weighed 175 pounds on fight night and Johnson 181 pounds, it still likely would be a close fight. Now bulk Spinks up to over 200 pounds while having him retain much of his skill and add the extra weight behind his punch and you'd have to make Spinks the favorite and likely H2H the tougher opponent to beat (styles notwistanding).

Don't know if he hit harder, I'm just saying that Spinks could deck hard enough at heavyweight to at least deck a b or c level super heavyweight and I could see him hurting any cruiser or cruiser size heavyweight.

Machen, by a surprisingly wide decision, Spink's heavy wins were an old Holmes and an alcoholic Cooney

Machen kinda spooked me...he was a potential wild card in a way that his highly regarded contemporary Zola Folley wasn't. After Ingo nearly killed him, who would have thought that he would cop an attitude, get his head screwed on right and give Sonny Liston such a challenging evening...oh, I know that in saying that I'm liable to have big bad Klompton come swooping down from his Mt Olympus ivory tower angrily throwing thunderbolts at an unwashed infidel like me even saying that, but dammit, Machen did pose problems for Sonny, and if it weren't for a possible injury suffered by Eddie, or maybe it was that Machen just physically couldn't do any better, but I feel that there was an extra gear in his (oh man, I hate this term) ""wheel house"" that prodded him on to fight an unexpectedly problematic fight like he did vs Liston. Having said all this, I'm kinda leery about outright picking Machen over Spinks, but who knows? Maybe something or another may have inspired him vs Michael.

Vanquishing Cooney at that particular time? I wouldn't bring that tid-bit to a job interview expecting to get hired on the spot.

What I meant is that is that if he hit Patterson with the same blows he hit Cooney with. Despite how Cooney may have been, he was a 240 pound giant. I didn't mean it in the sense that it means he'd automatically beat Patterson.
