Could the Michael Spinks that beat Holmes and Cooney avenge his brother Leon's loss against the Coatzee that beat Michael Dokes? This would be an interesting fight. Of course, Spinks would be his usual awkward, punches from all angles fighter against the straight up boxer-puncher Coatzee. I think Spinks could avoid the heavier handed fighter to take a close decision over 15 rounds.
I agree with you...I think Spinks was clever enough to outwit Coetzee to avenge his brother's painful obliteration by the South African. Coetzee's right would be studiously avoided and respected by Spinks. it would go 15..Spinks by decision.
Spinks would be way to much talent for Gerry to handle. He never really impressed me to much. Slow, plodding, 1dimentiinal, but good power.
M. Spinks by decision. Spinks went 2-0 in 2 close fights vs. Holmes. He also stopped Cooney in 5 (dropped him twice) and the lightly regarded S. Tangstad in 4. In his last fight as a pro he was stopped in 1 round by Tyson... prior to the Tyson fight he had never been down. 31-1 (21) overall and 15-1 (10) in World Title Fights. He was the Lineal LHW and HW Champ. He beat some very good/great/Hall of Famers like Marvin Johnson, Yaqui Lopez, Eddie Mustafa, Dwight Qawi, Larry Holmes x2, and Gerry Cooney among others. He was much better than Coetzee.
I'd like to see Spinks take on the guy that Weaver & Tate fought in front of 80,000 people all cheering for the other guy. He never really went into the lions den to win fights and I wonder how good of a road warrior he'd be. Gerrie fights better with the home cooking & it's a close enough bout where that likely tips the scales to Coetzee. That was a pretty fast right hand he threw and it will land sometime during the bout & Coetzee could go 15 himself.
