I wouldn't bet on Cooney needing to drop Patterson seven times to finish him off.

If he did, then it woudl be the only time in his entire career, that he had ever beaten an opponent ranked in the top ten by Ring Magazine.

    See the problem?

Let's say that I am underestimating him?

He was an empty shell when he fought Spinks anyway.

Was Norton not ranked by the Ring? Pretty sure WBC had him at number 3.

I get your point, it's not exactly fair in most cases to rate a guy over someone else when he doesn't have very good showings and had a pretty much one time peak. I'm just saying a dude with a big punch would hurt a dude with a weakness for em, as long as we're talking about Patterson during his championship reign.

I agree with you there, I know paraplegic people who could've beaten that version of Cooney.

He was ranked 10 at the end of 1980, but I think it just goes to show you how much rankings mean when it comes to fights, Norton was a hollowed out shell and that's what matters. Janitor was wrong, but it ain't that big of a deal.

I think not, but if you can prove otherwise, then I will internalize that.

If you go look at the catalogues of The Ring's annual ratings, he's there at #10 for 1980. I'd link it, but I tried and my message has to be approved by a moderator, so I figured I'd just say it.

I have no proof he was, so I’ll take your word for it. Quite frankly he didn’t deserve his WBC rating either.

The argument here is Spinks vs Johansen.

Two of lineal heavyweight champions, vying for having the thinnest resume in the history of the division.

Johansen destroys a bunch of European fighters, then demolishes Machen in a way that neither Liston nor Frazier could, then he beats Patterson.

Spinks beats Holmes, probably should have lost the rematch, then beats a shell of Cooney, assuming that he was anything in the first place.

There is not much in it, but I lean towards Johansen.

I was never arguing to your opinion about the fantasy matchup pertinent in this thread, but the idea that Cooney wasn't as dangerous a puncher as Ingo.

LOL don’t sell Spinks short - there’s Tangstad.

My head tells me Spinks but I am feeling adventurous tonight: He gets hammered by Thor.

I must say Spinks gets very overrated at heavyweight. Two controversial decisions against an aging Holmes, a win over the worst version of Cooney that ever existed, Tangstaad (lol), and when he finally faces a peak ATG, he's dispatched by a mere 6 punches.

I think he laid down against Tyson - whether than can be argued for or against him, is I suppose in the eyes of the fan.
