Personally i can't count Spinks out. His lateral movement, jab, overall elusiveness and superb defense makes him a live one here. His power is not exactly out of play either, smaller men than Spinks have rattled Jack and Spinks power might be underrated at Heavyweight. This is the Spinks from Holmes one, not the rusty and struggling one from Tyson.

I would pick Dempsey to KO spinks in round 4 or 5, something like that. Spinks will not win a round in my estimation.

    And you should have said

    Let's get ready to ruuuuuuuuuuuuun!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

As the man once said, you can run, but you can't hide.

Spinks was a brilliant operator with a style all of his own and an unlikely level of punching power, but how is he going to get away from Dempsey?

Jack would tear after him like he did against all his tall, bean pole-like opponents and open him up like a tin can.

Spinks awkward ability would count for stalling the highly likely downfall of his vertical base. Deadly, quick and hard to read deliveries from Dempsey would calve Spinks up in a handful of rounds, or under.

I think a prime Spinks out boxes Dempsey, or even stops him late. Spinks was bigger, stronger, faster, more athletic and more skilled than a lot of Dempsey's foes. Frankly, I think Spinks' win over an aging Holmes was still better than any win Dempsey ever had.

    Listen to Ted Spoon.

"highly likely downfall of his vertical base" translation = KTFO.

Dempsey by KO in 3 or 4 rounds. Spinks' style was tough for boxers but as Tyson proved, not for staight ahead sluggers. Jack would be on Mike from the opening bell and on his chest throwing fast powerful combos with murderous intentions. Spinks would do ok for the first couple of rounds but it would only delay the inevitable.

Hey!!! You beat me to this match-up! I've thought about this fantasy for awhile...It's very hard to pick a winner. But it's alot of fun trying to analysis it.
Have you ever read Jack Dempsey's book 'Championship Fighting'? He goes into a very detailed description on increasing punching power and explosiveness...Using your entire body weight behind your blows...If you practice that sort of stuff, these techniques do work...Dempsey stated that he extensively studied and practiced these techniques learned from Fitzsimmons and Gans among others.
What I'm getting to in a round-about way is... there is more than meets the eye with Dempsey! Recently I had a look at the Dempsey/Firpo fight and ran through the knockdowns of Firpo in slow motion...Dempsey's left hooks and short right crosses were devastating! Firpo was just blown off his feet at times with the impact of the blows , the punches were very compact, and lightining fast (in real time AND in slow motion) With Dempsey's entire body weight behind them. Firpo was one strong man...Check it out...You will be impressed...
When thinking about this fight, I can never pick a winner...I wonder about Dempsey's head movement or lack of it (at times) against the very good left jab of Spinks...It was a very fast and heavy jab....Spinks could also explode with combinations under and over (see the Cooney fight)The uppercuts would be effective against Jack...I see both guys hurting each other in this fight...Dempsey fights an instinctual fight, he just goes for it (knockout)...Spinks would have to get respect or get blown out...With Dempsey's defensive liabilities at times, I think Spinks would get his respect..on the other hand, he is in the ring with a tiger... who is wanting to kill him....Literally.
I'd say if Spinks hears the final bell, he is the winner...If it ends by stoppage...Dempsey.
    I still can't decide!:bbb

out of all the dominant heavyweight champs, dempsey has by far the weakest heavyweight resume. Firpo, sharkey, willard and 2 light heavyweights. Thats his ****in resume and people like to bash tyson and consider this joke a lock for atg. At least tyson has 2 ATGs on his resume, whether they were prime or not. Dempsey has beat no one thats even top 150 p4p of all times.
