1985 Spinks vs prime Quarry always made me wonder? Quarry is no prime Tyson, so don't think for a second because he was a "heavyweight" he demolishes Spinks in 1 round. Speaking of which, Quarry was 6'0 195-200 pounds, 1985 Spinks was 6'3 205 pounds. Who wins this one?

While it’s no guarantee, I think Michael Spinks has a great chance at getting the win here. He was both awkward and brilliant. Not the sort of fighter who would walk into Quarry’s counters. He could also punch a bit, had a decent chin and could go 15 rounds. Again it’s a tough fight but I’m kinda leaning towards Spinks

I think Michael controls Jerry with the jab for the most part, weathering a few rough spots when Quarry gets in range and unloads with combos.

Later in the fight, the Spinks Jinx starts to come into play as Michael nails Quarry coming in with flush right hands. He wins on a cuts stoppage or maybe a TKO when he wobbles Jerry and jumps all over him somewhere around the 10th or 12.

Agree. Spinks had a great jab and could be very elusive

Hmm?,, I don't know. Quarry had wins over Ron Lyle, Earnie Shavers , Buster Mathis and Floyd Patterson and I believe Floyd was far better than Spinks at heavyweight. The arguments given in Spinks favor are solid however and it would be a good fight but I've always considered Spinks resume at heavyweight to be paper thin. In reality he was 1-1 with a past it Holmes ,with victories over Tangstad and a weak Cooney and I might go with a 28 year old Quarry to get to Spinks.

I don't think he would stop Spinks, but he could win. And Patterson and Spinks had different styles, so Spinks wouldn't be there for Quarry to hit like Patterson was. By the way, I think Patterson was robbed vs Quarry. Both times.

Jerry Quarry is not an ancient Larry Holmes of 1985, nor is he a past it Gerry Cooney from 1987. Quarry has been in there in his fighting prime with the likes of Floyd Patterson, Mac Foster, Joe Frazier, George Chuvalo, Thad Spencer, Jimmy Ellis and Muhammad Ali. Michael Spinks may have the Spinks Jinx at Light Heavyweight but against a counterpuncher like Quarry, no chance. Jerry would target that lanky torso of Spinks, and counter every Spinks combos. Jerry stops Michael late from an accummulation of severe body blows.

Excellent post. My thoughts exactly. Spinks beyond overrated at heavyweight.

Well Quarry, would be a cruiser by today's standards. So it's like matching Spinks against a cruiser. And many agree that Spinks could have been a ATG at cruiser. The HW version of Spinks was 6'2 205-208 lbs which would have been a particularly large HW during the 60s and prior. Quarry was 6'0 195-200 lbs and I get it, size isn't everything. But matching Spinks vs Quarry isn't the same as matching Spinks vs Lennox Lewis. Lewis, BTW, would stop Spinks and Quarry. Also, Quarry is closer to the size of Spinks rather than Lewis and would be better matched vs Spinks than a HW like Lewis or Bowe or AJ.

Spinks had FIVE fights at heavy. Two disputed decisions against Holmes, one win over Tangstaad, hardly a world beater, a shot Gerry Cooney, and was demolished by the first prime world-class champion he actually fought.

Sure but, Quarry isn't prime Tyson. Quarry is also actually closer in size to Marciano TBH. Rocky was like 5'10 185 lbs and Quarry was 6’0 195-200 lbs. Spinks at 6'2 205 lbs would be large enough to handle any fighter 176-200 lbs in history, regardless if we call that fighter a cruiserweight or a heavyweight. That includes Marciano, Dempsey, Tunney, Charles, Walcott, the CW version of Holyfield and yes, even Quarry. If he lost to any of those men (which he possibly could TBH) it wouldn't be because they were too big.

By the way, I don't think Quarry would do so well against a 1988 Tyson, either. I don't know if it would be a first round KO, but it would be a massacre that would end in a few rounds.

I wasn't comparing Quarry to Tyson at all. I was showing Spinks resume at heavyweight was very questionable. No shame in losing to Tyson but the rest of his heavyweight resume is sorely lacking imho.

True, but I think that would be more relevant if you are comparing him against more larger, modern day heavyweights. Just my opinion.
