Spinks by a clear decision or stoppage. In this one Joe is up against the biggest and most powerful guy he has ever fought who is also as canny as Hopkins. One of Joe's biggest advantages was that he was cannier than most he fought...not so in this case. Spinks to big, too powerful, too crafty & too good. For what it's worth, I would pick John Conteh over Calzaghe at LHW without hesitation.
So would most British boxing fans as well as myself(I'm from New York).I did a poll on the British Boxing forum as well the General about 6 months ago between John and Joe Calzaghe and it was almost unanimous for John.John Conteh was a terrific lightheavyweight that happened to have fought in a ridiculously tough era in that division. Not only did he have great skills, but he had a wonderful boxing IQ as well. It's great to know that he gets his just due recognition on the Classic:good
Spinks in a close, close fight. Calzaghe would fight Spinks, the way Spinks fought Holmes. A lot of in and out, amateur type flurries and would keep it close. A couple of knockdowns for Spinks alomg the way, and those are the deciding factors. In a 15 round fight: Spinks 143-Calzaghe 142.
Zaghe would win the early rounds since Spinks was a slow starter. Once it progresses into the middle stanzas it's Spinks Jinx time. TKO in eight rounds. To prepare for this fight Mike would spar his nephew
I don't think it's fair to match up Calzaghe with the best at Light Heavyweight. Calzaghe's resume at that weight is practically non-existent.
I'd expect Spinks to win because he's the naturally bigger, stronger man, could fight inside, and I think he'd catch Calzaghe with uppercuts on the way in.
Calzage stepped up to Light heavyweight for a minute but he was also 37 years old and he did well beating B-Hop and Jones but Spinks was a natural 175lbs and at that weight one of the best, Calzage is skillful and quick but he was king of 168 and asking him to fight a top 5-10 ATG Light heavyweight champ is like asking Gene Tunney to fight the top 5 Heavyweights ...he may do better than we think but a uphill battle ...Jose Torres,Dick Tiger and others came up from middleweight and won a crown at 175lbs but they were not ATG Light Heavyweight s but Tiger was an ATG middleweight
We've been over this already. Calzaghe would have been a 175 lb fighter in the early 80s, before the 168 lb division was created. At 168, he weighed around 175 in the ring. When I say that Spinks was bigger, I'm talking about his frame. But Calzaghe was a natural light heavy in the old school sense. Hopkins and Jones were also natural light heavies. Jones' prime ring weight was 182-185 at modern light heavy.
