The best HW version of Spinks vs an early 70's incarnation of Muhammad Ali? Obviously, Ali is to be favored, but how much of a fight would Spinks make it?

Spinks would give Ali a lot of problems, but Ali showed in his 2nd and 3rd fights v Frazier that he could work a difficult quick fisted fighter out and defeat them, his fight IQ was amazing and Spinks wouldn`t anywhere near as many punches on Ali as Frazier did in all their matches, plus Frazier`s bobbing head movement was too erratic far Ali to time with the jab Spinks would have more trouble dealing with the jab whenever he would be in punching range it would hard for him to evade the jab while trying to land his shots, it would be a tight chess match but an in-shape Ali would be too good and too powerful, Spinks didn`t have a chin like Fraziers and Ali hurt Joe several times in their meetings whereas Spinks would not be able to hurt Ali, good fight I`d say though.

Ali had problems with many guys. He was great, I think a little overrated as most greats are at times. Most guys can be beaten if they fight the top guys and fight often. Spinks was bigger than most people think. Look at him with Holmes, he did not look as small as I thought he would. He is I think 6-2 1/2 and Ali was 6-3. Height would be near each other, and I think reach would be close also. Ali would have to be in shape to beat Spinks. I think the 1960s Ali beats Spinks easily. I think the 1970s Ali struggles and could lose but probably edges it.

6'0", 196 lb Rudi Lubbers vs 217½ lbs Muhammad Ali in 1973....probably good it wasn't Hvywt M. Spinks in there with Ali.. in that particular fight.
    • Rudi Lubbers competed in the 1964 Olympics as light heavyweight, and in the 1968 Olympics as a heavyweight.
    • Lubbers is best remembered for lasting the distance in a 12-round fight with Muhammad Ali in 1973.
1973-10-20 : Muhammad Ali 217½ lbs beat Rudi Lubbers 196 lbs by UD in round 12 of 12
    Notes
    • Ali was a 4 to 1 betting favorite.
    • Lubbers was the Dutch Heavyweight Champion.
    • There was a crowd of 25,000 at Bung Karno Stadium, known at the time as Senayan Stadium.
    • Ali hit Lubbers often, but couldn't knock him off his feet,

Ali blew hot and cold in the 70`s, he was fantastic in the Frazier rematch compared to their first epic clash and it`s his IQ that would be the difference here and the punches he hurt Frazier with would have a great effect on Spinks while Michaeel`s punches would do nothing to Ali.

I was watching the Cooney fight and Spinks looked like a legit heavyweight in that fight.

Straightforward win for Ali. I've never been too convinced by Spinks north of 175. Got past a very jaded-looking Holmes first time out, but very lucky to get the nod in the return. Defends against a relative no-mark in Tangstad, and then ditches the IBF to fight an inactive (three fights in five years!) and gun-shy Cooney, before being marmalised by Tyson. Yeah, Tyson was peak in 1988, but let's face it - Spinks didn't want to be there and looked like a condemned man being walked to the gallows.

Ali by late stoppage or wide points win.

Early 70's Ali as designated in the OP would beat Spinks comfortably.

Spinks body didn`t look great at heavyweight but I feel he would have made a great cruiser and might have beaten Holy at that weight and would have done well v Holy at heavy too, specifically before Holy had his rematch v Bowe, I feel Before that bout Holy hadn`t convinced enough at heavy.

Spinks would have had a tough tough fight against the Holyfield that beat Douglas. Go and watch it and look how sharp he was.

Might have something to do with Frazier being in decline and suffering a bad hammering by Foreman as short as it was by the time the rematch happened, like most pressure fighters Joe was starting to lose steam. Ali deals with Spinks comfortably, could TKO him if he tried

I think it'd be a stoppage mimicking his fights with Patterson.
