As big of a fan as I am of 70s-80s light heavies, I had never watched this one, although I'd known about it for several years. It was an awesome slugfest! I almost couldn't believe my eyes. It was especially great to see Yaqui giving prime Spinks such a tough fight after being stopped my Saad in the 1980 rematch. I bet people thought Yaqui was through after the Saad rematch, but he didn't look through here against Michael. Whoever hasn't seen this one really should. Considering my recent 80s threads, this definitely has to go for one of the best fights of 1980. Awesome fight.

Cool to see how u scored the rounds. I don't think it was wise for Lopez to take Spinks on that soon, either. However, I think Lopez had been in the game too long and had seen too many wars and would probably have never beat Spinks. Pretty admirable though, how after he lost to Muhammad he took a fight with a top contender and went to war just like with Muhammad.

The above account of the Michael Spinks vs Alvaro Yaqui Lopez fight sounds about right to me. The Spinks Jinx was pretty devastating to the challengers of the 1980's.

Michael Spinks had a jab that could erase the features from your face and a right hand that could make you forget what you used to look like.

Pretty good hook and uppercut, too.

The first time I watched MSM vs Lopez II I needed 3 months to recover.
It beggers belief how not only did he jump back in the ring so quickly, it was against a future great AND he gave him a pretty darn good dust up aswell.

As morbid as this sounds I hope Yacqui donates his body to science after he passes away. Because whatever that man is made of needs to be isolated and used to coat tanks or the presidents limo or something.

Spinks-Lopez resembled so many other Spinks fights.

Spinks started slow, and Lopez was a fast starter so of course he built up an early lead. But then Spinks started cookin, started getting that piston jab off consistently, and once the Jinx started landing with reguality, it was goodnight Yauqi.

It's good for Saad that a Spinks fight never came to pass. It would have ended violently for Saad.
