https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_FMKeGWvpTk&list=UUklnC_m-tR3-XmK7e-4Cy-Q This is his contest with 5-0-1 Jasper Brisbane. Hardly tender, is he? Aggressive, coming inside, fighting rather recklessly I would say. This one is crazy too: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FdVmKZ5QVL8&list=UUklnC_m-tR3-XmK7e-4Cy-Q Anyone know when/why he got over this?
Off you go... But I've watched both and it is rather surprising (also surprising: his low weight in the 'day of' era. Nowadays he would've started his career as a junior middleweight. Although now I wonder how he filled out so nicely at heavy...) kinda a reverse Gomez/Rosario thing. Instead of falling in love his power I think he realized that with his awkward style he was more likely to score kayo with patience. The only knockout he scored early at the world class level was Sears and Johnson but I think that was more about a change in approach than his opposition.
You could see traces of the fighter he was to become, though. He was certainly aggressive, but still had that sense of calm about him when opponents tried to bring the fight. And props to him for facing some decent guys (Luis Rodriguez in particular) right from the start.
He was! This is a good observation because Lomachenko is a storied am who recently turned in a performance totally devoid, almost literally, of any meaningful infighting ability. Great am, can't in-fight. Look at Spinks, dominant and busy on the inside at 5-0.
It was his left hand really. The best left uppercut in light heavy history and a hook usable at any range.
A gal I usta date attended Spinks vs Ramone Ranquillo and caught a face full of Ramones gore. Let me add, she was ringside of course and has since joined the Hari Krisnas.
