I agree. He demolished Tunney in their first fight and lost the later fights only because he had ONLY ONE GOOD EYE.

I don't know about ranking but surely one would have Greb, Charles, Foster, Spinks, Langford, Fitzsimmons up there. I'm not on either Ward or Kovalevs bandwagons. And I can't stand even the thought of Tunney much less putting on a list of great fighters.

    Edit: I forgot Moore.

Ward stopped kovalev. How could somebody rate kovalev 5th all time and not rate Ward?

Hes had five fights at light heavyweight, and two for legitimate 175 titles, both of which had controversial results. If someone rates Jack Dempsey at number five on an ATG heavyweight list, does that mean Gene Tunney gets to be a top 10 heavyweight?

Well Greb told Tunney he got too big for him, so it could not just be the eye.
Was not one of the decisions for Tunney controversial?

Also there is another question, implied by the increased size of Tunney.
Boxers from the era of day before weigh ins were not LHWs by classic standards.
The more recent guys discussed could be the best simply because some were ~ 10% heavier, the size of most HWs until the 1960's.

To be fair, I think we should consider weight classes not by what # they weighed officially, but what they were really on fight night.

Hagler was amongst the greatest MWs, but most think he could not have beat the best competitions like Spinks at LHW. Even if he moved up!

So how would it be fair or rational to match him up theoretically with guys that might be even above the LHW limit on fight night?

There were a couple controversial wins for Tunney over Greb, but the last one was cut and dried for Tunney and yes, Greb said he was too big for him.

I don't know how we could judge a boxer by what he really weighed...all the lower weight guys gain 10 pounds or so from the weigh in. We have no measured data even today, just "unofficial" weights; fights from long ago have even less data. I guess all we could say is everyone gained about the same weight, but that's not true either.

Michael Spinks, despite having few fights, is probably a solid top 10 light-heavyweight.

I hate ranking those I haven't seen, but I've read enough to believe Greb is superior to Tunney at least, and so I use that as my basis.
