my wife is a recently (5yrs) converted boxing fan and has watched most of the major fights in this period and and generally holds her own with the "pub experts" shes never seen until this morning Watson v Eubank 2. we watched it and began talking about who is repsonsible for Michael ending up the way that he did, Eubank was only doing his job. we both agree the ref SHOULD have stopped it after Watson went down, or between rounds 11-12, then the other side of the coin is that his corner sent him out wiith him in front hoping that he would make it through, the ref then watches Eubank land over 20 punches without reply. whos to blame ? Ref or Watsons corner ?
The british boxing board of control who didnt put the necessary measures ie equipment for and people trained in resuscitation procdedures at ringside hence watson being carried through the crowd to get to hospital. He always went to a hospital that didnt have the personnel qualified in the surgery that he required immediately, wasting time gettin to St Barts and endangering his life further. If this was arranged before the damage he sustained woulda been treated quicker and he wouldnt have been in as bad a shape for the length of time that he was. Thankfully, through the courts and frank warren playing diplomat it got sorted and the boxing ring is a far safer place to be. To put blame on Jimmy Tibbs, the ref, Eubank etc isnt needed, in the case of tibbs and eubank they've punished themselves enough already
Both the referee and Micheal's cornermen have tried to claim responsibility for what happened. Micheal nixed them both. He was ahead in the biggest fight of his career and told both he wanted to continue.
I've always agreed with the assessment jdawg offers. With the proper medical treatment, Watson would've come out of that fine. The catalogue of errors that occured in getting him that treatment were the main cause of the permanent and terrible damage he sustained. Treatment at ringside has improved a lot thanks to what happened on that night. That at least is something good that came out of the situation.
Right back to when I first saw it live I have always thought Watsons corner should never have sent him out for the 12th when he was quite obviously gone. I understand why they did though....
Buy the book. It's available online. The publishers kicked Michael in the nuts by not pushing the book and refusing to update and republish. I've had legal letters from Time Warner telling me to stop abusing the publishers for their mistakes in marketing - getting the book republished is a campaign that could be mounted by forums. By the way if the book comes out and sells 250,000 copies I will not make a penny more. My money is banked and spent. Michael's book deserves a second run. Adios.
The ref or Corner should have stopped it. He couldn't even walk to the middle of the ring to touch gloves. I don't recall Roy Francis visiting the corners between rounds. He was a fairly good ref was Roy but I think that was his first world title fight.
Yeah as Bunce said, people should really buy this book and read it. I bought it about 3 years ago and it really is a great book. Not only does it give a superb insight into Michaels career, the fateful night and the aftermath, it's also genuinely inspiring :good
after the knockdown the end of the 11th round ended pretty soon after, however if you look at Watson when he came out for the 12th round he looked gone, he could barely lift his arms. You could lay the blame at the door of Watson, his corner and the ref, sadly that's how it turned out.
Eubanks power was to blame. That monster uppercut - was probaly the hardest he ever hit a man. He was desperate and just summoned up all his strength and threw a Hayemaker right bang on Watsons chin. that what done the damage.
I don't think much blame can go to Watson, I mean he was hardly in any frame of mind to make a decision. He may have instinctively said I'll fight on, but that's when those who haven't just been brutally laid out have to intervene and use their better judgement. It's all hindsight though isn't it.
I'll never forget thinking Michael was a goner the way he went down in the 11th round. I couldn't believe he got up never mind went out for the 12th. Will definitely order his book, cheers Buncey.
