the ref and his cornermen. how the **** could they not see he was done after the kd. in the corner he was a zombie.
Its called 'The Biggest Fight, Michael Watson's Story' and i sincerely recommend it. Ive had it a while and bought a copy for my m8 at the buncelive show he loved it and isnt a big boxing fan. I genuinely believe that despite the questioned incompetence of the ref and jimmy tibbs (remember it was michaels adamence to continue at the end of the day) if precautions were made prior to the fight he'd have been treated better-quicker and not sustained such life threatening and changing injuries. Regardless of what happened on that treacherous night. I have to say just briefly what a hero Michael Watson is, boxers today potentially owe their safety and health to the fight and desire of the people's champ. Theres only 1 Michael Watson.....
Nobody was to blame in reality. Tibbs and the ref weren't to blame. He wanted to carry on and hindsight is a wonderful ring. The medics ringside and the BBofC weren't to blame. In any walk of life, a mistake is made and people or relevant parties learn by their mistakes. What happened that night (as dreadfull as it was) served as a wake up call and a harsh lesson in reality that things needed changing. The implications of that night have probably saved close to a hundred lives within the sport in this country and as bad as it seems, if what happened to Watson that night hadn't have happened then it would have only happened sooner or later and things wouldn't have been changed until something of that nature happened. Still the bloke is an inspiration and his book should be bought by all who cherish the sport
I agree for the most part but the ringside doctor had next to no equipment, people (including his m8 Tim Westwood!) had to carry him out ofthe ring, that has to go on bbofc's head particularly after they changed procedure after this fight. Its awful this happened but your point about it woulda happened sooner or later is tragically very poingant and true. Michael Watson never placed blame on Eubank, Roy Francis or Jimmy tibbs and for me what he says goes. Im with dan, all you lovers of the fight game must buy this book you wont regret it. Paticularly touchin part where mohammed ali visits him in hospital.
his corner are there to look after him, regardless of how the fight was going. They failed and shoulder the majority of the blame. The ringside doctor and lastly the ref the rest.
Yeah agree totally, but what they were thinking was that it was nearly over, and he was still in there, all to play for, you just cant see whats happening right infront of your eyes sometimes, shame really.
Far from a haymaker, it was a perfect punch! That arc was perfect, the accuracy (bare in mind both were walking in) perfect, and it was full-power, as hard as he could to boot - fast and untelegraphed. Baring in mind he was getting up off the deck for the first time (legit), in a fight he'd been battered from pillar to post in like none could've imagined, and Eubank deserves boundless credit for that shot and the win. He'd be a flash in the pan now if not for that great shot, and probably couldn't have even stayed in this country to live!
the book bunce is talking about is avaliable for as little as 3quid on ebay, less than a pack of ***s!
I may cop some flack for this but I can't condone anyone being blamed for this apart from Michael himself. Nobody forced him to be a boxer, this is a tragic event which we all wish had never happened. He knew the risks. If he knew he was out on his feet he should have told his corner, they were trying to help him win a world title and gave him every opportunity. Sorry
Let's not look to aportion any kind of blame through a thread so many years on...Let's celebrate the motivation that Michael has given so many others who he has inspired...:yep The story of his life at the begining of the book and the lead upto his fight with John Beckles is great...:yep If you want to be inspired by the inner strength and pure determination to succeed you must read from Chapter 8. This is my favourite book, I have it in hardback, I bought it on holiday just after it came out...the picture of him crossing the finishing line of the London Marathon with Spencer Oliver and Chris Eubank gives me the goose bumps when you look on the other page with his head getting propped up by a briefcase... Please don't look to aportion blame.
Definately. Like other people have said he was in front and the corner and himself must have thought he would have survived. Its just a tragedy which nobody within 60 secs could have forseen happening.
I ain't no doctor but right there and then, when I saw the state Watson was in, I knew he was in a lot of trouble and that his cornermen simply had to pull him out and prevent him being hit anymore. I mean, ffs, it's not nice to heap blame upon someone for what happened but it was bloody obvious that Watson was completely gone. The ref was the next port of call and when he allowed the fight to go on I was just stunned.
makes you wonder why we slag refs off now then when they stop fights probably quicker than we like. maybe fights like this have something to do with it.
