Having just read his autobiography I was curious on everyones opinion of him as a fighter. I have only seen the Benn and Eubank 2 fights, so if anyone knows any sites where I can see more of his fights it would be appreciated. From what i have seen he looks like a good mover with a nice straight right and good workrate. How do people think he would fare against fighters such as Herol Graham, Toney and Jones?
michael watson was an excellent boxer, managed to see him live twice at the mcCallum and eubank 1 fights. outclassed nigel benn in a great performance but to be fair benns tactics were all wrong that night. watson and graham were 2 class middleweights that should have won world titles and boy they both came close.
Excellent figher. Beat Eubank in the first one and got robbed and was on his way to clear victory in the second fight until tragedy occured. Did a number on Benn also once he weathered the storm. Excellent fighter no doubt shame what happended to him.
awesome fighter, lovely boxing skills, decent punch and good chin. Not as good as a peak benn but very close.
Real good fighter great movment beat eubanks in the first fight IMO. I think he would have held a title no problem but it was not to be.
he was kinda of a mix of winky wright and james toney. he had a great jab geat defence. could punch and set up traps and counters...reason why he beat benn was becuase he stayed composed and let benn swing to his hearts content. then when he tired i think everybody knew benn was going to get stopped. watson just fired off great 3 to 5 hit combo's on him. also was known to fight southpaw. somthign that reminds me off james toney is becuase he had no real stance. he would turns lefty or orthy when ever hewanted to give him and edge of awkwardness. amazing jab. it could travel aswell. really fast really snappy and damn long. against mcCallum he didnt seem himself. i know, poor guy gets hurt badly by eubank. and now he is the best fighter to come ou tof the british isles never to win a title... it's not like that, mcCallum was going to fight benn...even before the benn-watson fight. watson was called up i think in 2 weeks time or somthing like that? people also forget how big he was at 5'11 and 160 pounds it doesnt make him seem big...but he used to wiegh up to 180 pounds outside of fight time. he was a bigger man than people think. and tell me if anyone can lose 20+ pounds in 14 days then please tell me the diet regime...prolly just dust and celery. his mother was hilarous to she was always there. she was his dietrition as well...the one serving dust and celery maybe? she was like your typical jamiacan born british mother. sayin g stuff like "ee wa never too big to get a slap" got into boxing around 15 when he was getting bullied by some local toughs. in islington (tough mother****ing place in 70's london) like harlem of new york...decent place but you better not step on some peeps shoes, semme.
I think it is a toughie to decide whether Watson or Herol Graham was the best boxer never to win a world title from these shores...... Though I suppose Watson had it taken away from him whilst Bomber blew it by punching Mike McCallum in the stones, and by failing to realise that he was taking Julian Jackson to school with his tactics.
