Michalczewski-Ottke is off! Monday, April 7 2008 The "oldies" clash between former world champions Dariusz Michalczewski and Sven Ottke has imploded. Team Michalczewski has announced that 'The Tiger' is no longer available "due to the non-compliance with key contractual elements." The fight, slated for May 24th at the TUI Arena in Hannover, Germany, never really caught on as TV networks showed little interest and ticket sales were lukewarm at best. Both Michalczewski and Ottke were reportedly to receive around 2 million each.
i sort of did just to see what would happen ...but i'm not going to lose sleep over it being shut down
Either one of them must realize that he won't be able to stand in front of the line to face the winner of Calzaghe-Hopkins just by beating the other. So what's the point in the exercise? The Hopkins-Wright fight just happened so that the winner could take on the winner of Calzaghe-Kessler and make more money before calling it a day, at last. Ottke ( or Michalczewski ) may get an opportunity to fight one of the other oldies but that depends on how much they are willing to put on the table, not on himself or his unblemished record alone.
Well... I've never got excited for the Darek vs. Ottke fight but I'd probably watched it on TV. What I don't understand is people jumping on and trashing any oldies fight made in Europe (on free TV) but paying $50 for Jones vs. Tito...
:rofl :rofl I was thinking the same thing ..Better yet this was the first time I had heard of this fight actually getting done !
Surprising that ticket sales were so poor. Thought the German public would've lapped this **** up along with all the other drivel that parades as boxing there
We ain't no Americans...:yep...just kiddin. But another reason could be big disappointments in the recent past like Axel Schulz' beat-down and the snoozer that was Hill vs. Maske...
There is a growing trend to dig up the corpses of former fighters and prop them up against one another. Hopefully the cancellation of this 'fight' will put an end to this nonsense.
