What a thread. 1. The fight was SIX frigging weeks ago, Alfonso is a top contender, Hunter will likely qualify at the second qualifier (he was the one who lost to Fury but is much better now). 2. Wilder lost the final to the Cuban World #1 but qualified.
I just see he beat dangerous Didier Bence and must defeat capable Jose Payares tonight. I belireve hes through then.
Wlad won the gold medal at age 20. Hunter is a talent. He is young, and will improve with age. His main problem is he does not like pressure type of fighters, and is only an average puncher.
Well, he still won easily but here ar two facts. 1. Hunter did a lot of running while throwing a lazy jab, he didn't even look like he was trying to win. 2. Timurzev wasn't in good shape, he quit the tournament after that to underwent surgery because of appendicitis, he only made the fight because he needed that win to qualify for the Olympics.
Yea Hunter did a lot of running? Is that why the last minute and thirty seconds, Timurziev literally ran from one end to the other over and over again to avoid Hunter? NBT your always hating on Hunter for no reason. He is young and inexpirenced, but getting better and better with every fight. Take for example, after losing a close fight in the Beijing Test Event to Russian Denis Sergeyev (Who beat Timurziez), Hunter turned around around and beat him by a 10 point Margin in the USA-Russian Dual. Also in that Dual, inexpirenced Deontay Wilder beat #1 Russian Rakhim Chakhiyev
Yeah, his Dad was a pro, but not a very good one! David Price did beat him fairly convincingly later that year, that's the way with the Amateurs - you can end up in fights with people far more experienced! Hunter sounds like he has some promise, anyway - I wouldn't write someone off after a Pro loss, nevermind an amateur loss!
Yeah, he wasn't in shape and had the fight in the bag, so why should he risk anything? After all the WC were in Chicago so you never know, the scores were already closer than it really was. I'm not hating on him, I'm the voice of reason here who tries to put things into perspective. The guy is second tier and not because of what _I_ think of him but because he is simply not that good. And we don't need to argue about the fact that there wouldn't be a thread on this board about him if he wasn't American, do we? BTW Wilder beat Chakhiev by one awsome point, simply wow. :yep In return he was stopped by Evgeny Romanov. [yt]FNO5bVPP-uw[/yt]
He beat Oliver McCall, Dwight Muhammad Qawi, Pinklon Thomas, Tyrell Biggs, Buster Mathis Jr. and Jimmy Thunder. His only loss in his prime before he became a crack addict was a majority decision loss to Franz Botha. He wouldn't have stood up to the top fighters, but he was a solid B-level fighter.
Hunter did a lot of running?! :rofl :rofl :rofl Watch the 4th round again, man. For such a beast, Timurziev didn't come off like he really wanted to fight anymore.
And Wilder has under 30 fights. Pretty pathetic that someone who only started boxing 3 years ago could defeat a member of the indomitable Russian National team in Russia, huh?
I agree, pretty funny that a track athlet gets labeled as "the real deal". :yep I have watched the fight a dozen times, maybe you should have a look for once? :yep When the fight was paused because Hunter was checked by the doctor because of a cut Timurziev was obviously told that he had the fight won and shouldn't take any risks, that's why he cruised to an easy victory in the last minute. Ist it? Well, if it's a one point difference it's basically luck who get's the win. I'm not too high on Chakhkiev anyway, I still think Romanchuk for all his flaws would have been the better choice.
Yeah, too bad Romanchuk pissed off every national team coach there is. But still, for a guy that's been boxing for 3 years, it says something when he beats the representative for the strongest amateur program in the world.
I guess the title on this thread is on target now. Hunter lost to Jose Payares last night and is not going to the Olympics.
Rather sad IMO, cause I believe that he would have a much better chance in Beijing then american heavyweight Wilder. He had some unluck during the qualifications. In WC (the 1st qualifier) everyone who reached the semi got a ticket, Hunter ran into the best super heavy in the world Timurziev in the quarterfinal. In the 2nd qualifier only the winner got a ticket and Hunter reached the final and lost to cuban Robert Alfonso. Alfonso would probably have been qualified already if Cuba hadn't boycotted the WC. In the 3rd qualifier Hunter got ill and as you say also got a horrible draw. The Colombian Oscar Rivas took the other ticket here and he was outclassed by Hunter in the 2nd qualifier
