Give me a break. Williams was beyond shot. He hadn't beaten anyone of note for half a decade, his bubble having been burst 7 years before.. He wasn't going to beat anyone of note for the rest of his career. Hell, he was going to go .500 for the 8 remaining fights of his career. Not only was he a has-been. He was becoming to be understood as a never-was.
I don't think anybody considers him an ATG but his great power and lack of chin made his fights more interesting.
Actually, I have to go back on what I said earlier. I watched this fight last night to refresh my memory. Williams wasn't shot. His run going in wasn't bad. His jab was sharp, his movement and reflexes still pretty good. He took some bombs and kept fighting back. It's right there on film. His form here belies his record subsequent to this fight.
After the defeat by Tyson, Williams became a journeyman heavyweight. His other notable fights include losses to Larry Holmes, Tim Witherspoon, Tommy Morrison, and Frank Bruno, and wins against Bert Cooper and Trevor Berbick.
He lost to Jerry Jones and Tim Witherspoon before meeting Tommy and then got out-boxed by Bruno in the fight after he got beat by Tommy, he wasn`t a top 10 contender when he met Morrison.
Square on, gung-ho Morrison would be constantly set up for the straight left when he wings the left hook, and Moorer would be able to land his own check lead hook on Morrison, he’d get Morrison to commit by throwing some simple jabs and that’d set him up and make him bite.
