Eeesh! Toughy. Conteh would certainly start faster but Spinks was just so dangerous. I'll leave it to more knowledgeable posters. Out of the golden period of of the 70's and 80's Spinks,Conteh and Foster were probably the best.
Conteh was too unproven by comparison to favor him if we're being completely objective. If we're leaving that objectivity out of this, I'll take Conteh by Decision in a very strategic bout. He seemed to have it all before his quick demise, and we may not have even seen him at his peak.
Conteh was good......his star only burned bright for a short time. All those mid-seventies guys could beat each other.....Saad, Galindez, Johnson, Eddie Mustafa, etc.
I think, Conteh, that brief window Conteh, The Vicious Aggression, The Cobra'esque Head Movement, the Smooth Boxing Ability, and with TWO good hands, he could pull off what many might see as an upset, Mike sometimes had a war before he pulled the spinks Jinks out of the Hat, His win over the faded Yaqui Lopez looks great on Paper, but the Result does not spell out the Hell Yaqui gave him, Even Willie "The Bull" Taylor Gave Prospect Mike Stubbon resistence, Of Course Willie was instrumental in Johns initial career stall in Conteh Busting his right hand on Willies Tough Noggin in a non title fight (Willie also did this to Jesse Burnett, Some tough Noggin Willie had !) the fight that tips me an on form Contehs way Mikes Title defence against Cute Eddie Davis, Eddie was a good all round Pro Crafty Cagey and Cute, as Conteh could be, but without the prime Contehs Venom. The Decision in favour of Eddie was Close and some felt Eddie deserved the Nod, I think Conteh, Firing on all clylinders might just get it. ( with a bit of Conteh rough stuff assisting - so the Ref's lattiude might be crucial ?)
I'm going to take Spinks by a close decision. When faced with the highest competition at 175 (Mustafa Muhammed and Qawi), Spinks found a way with his boxing ability. Conteh may be even a tougher nut to crack than those two. Conteh was a beautiful technician, but I actually think Spinks awkwardness and variation are pluses in this one. Spinks = awkward but I think he still remained technically sound. I call it Spinks 9-6 or 8-6-1. Close.
In what respect? Any particular stylistic comments? Anyway, I think Spinks takes this. Conteh would be starting well and his ability to change things up on the fly would see him give a good account of himself. His chin was really good, but I see Spinks making it hard for him late on, timing him with hard shots. Unlike Saad I think Spinks gets him out of there, TKO 13.
In virtually ever deparment spinks is the better fighter. better skills, bigger puncher, better boxing brain, and just the overall better fighter
I think Spinks would probably win as well now that I've thought about it a bit more. I don't think Spinks has better skills though. Not by a long shot.
Spinks way too strong and powerful for John Conteh........ Conteh was also as boring if not more so than Virgil Hill at 175, as well.... :admin MR.BILL
