Interesting matchup but Spinks wins this by a wide gap dec. I like John Conteh alot but Michael Spinks @ 175 was legendary.
You obviously have never watched much of either fighter. Spinks was a bigger puncher, that's about it. He wasn't far behind in many key categories, but his power and crafty punching techniques are what give him a major chance in this fight and pretty much any other at LHW. Conteh was surely a more skilled and versatile boxer, though. Among the best I've ever seen at LHW in that regard.
Conteh may have been more fluid, and I think he would have gotten off to a good start. But Spinks' jab abilty to avoid getting caught with anything more than one shot at a time would enable him to stay in the fight, until such time as he began find the range with right hand. Once that happened, I could see a situation where he scored a couple of late knockdowns, and that would have made the difference in the end in terms of the scorecards. Spinks UD
after seeing what you look like, i wound't like to fight you on the street. you just look like a fighter, you must of easy had over 50 amature bouts. How many fights u had 50, 100, etc?
Right up there with Holyfield imo! Laugh at some of these posters who think Spinks wins easy. This a really, really tough match for either man. And the poster who thinks Spinks had better skills!atsch Conteh imo is the very definition of a classy boxer!
i remember conteh at his peak,a beautiful boxer with a big punch in either hand, but he wouldn't beat spinx.spinx has got to be be in the top 3 off all time.i think conteh would get KO'D in this, the ***** in his armour was he didn't take a shot too well. conteh boring ?? as statements go,its as stupid as you can get.
I agree with your take. And stylewise, Spinks is much better when he gets to play the matador versus the bull type fights. Conteh could lead and was a real good counterpuncher which are completely different than the styles Spinks had to deal with up until that Davis fight. And he sure did get countered in that one. This would be a boxing match and a legs bout. I think the footwork of Conteh is much better and quicker than the herky jerky then stop and plant to punch style Spinks used--mostly for retreating and taking breathers in there. That's another thing I'd favor Conteh with as well---he really did like to fight 3 minutes per round and Spinks sure did like a ton of breathers. There wouldn't be any breathers against Conteh and I think a prime Conteh outworks him. Come to think of it, I think a 74-76 Ahumada presents problems to Spinks as well. Both guys are resilent enough to not get stopped, but I can see Conteh doing most of the work and getting the nod in a bout that would not exactly be a fan friendly type encounter.
The more I see of Conteh, the more I appreciate his style and skills. I think in a 12 rounder, he might have the fluidity and jab to get a decision over Spinks. But Michael has the power to change a fight with one punch though, the tables could turn on Conteh very quickly.
Spinks by a UD, Conteh may hit the floor but Spinks dominates and hurt John a few times but John makes it interesting and competitive
