I see this as a back and forth action packed fight with Roy nicking a decision with the more flashy work.
Well i think if it's action packed we'd be seeing Spinks stopping Jones. I rate Jones at the highest level, he is an effective and great fighter, but i just favour Spinks on a styles match-up myself. He's not going to get dragged into a pattern of fighting wherein he's following Roy around and getting beat by his reflexes and speed. Spinks has unorthodox movement and switches his attacks from being on the back foot with minimal telegraphing, i'd imagine his deceptive jab works ok for him as well. I wouldn't rule Roy out because if the fight is fought at a low pace he could come good, picking shots and firing rapid stuff, but i'm more inclined to think Spinks finds his mark for reasons i said first.
I think Roy takes an early lead, but somewhere around the fifth or sixth round, Michael asserts himself, and by the seventh to ninth, Roy would be coldcocked.
Spinks..Roy can win it, if they fought ten times he is getting a few but I think Michael is the better light heavy.
I usually pick Michael Spinks. He was a slow starter and given the qualities Jones brings to the table with his lightning quick hands and mobility, I wouldn't be all to surprised to see Spinks made to look the fool for a few lopsided rounds. However, Spinks was never easily disheartened, he lost the opening rounds in most of his fights, so this wouldn't be unfamiliar ground for him. Once he started to let loose with his awkward, unorthodox combination's and authoritative jab, I see Jones becoming rather confused on how to deal with Spinks, who was big at standing almost 6'3. I think once Spinks gets into his rhythm it would only be a matter of time until he planted a right hand on Jones...and I don't envision Jones withstanding it.
One thing. I don't think Spinks would "get into his rhythm". Finding a rhythm versus Jones is no joke - and finding a rhythm other than one Jones is happy for you to be in (Hopkins, Ruiz), I don't think it was done in the 90's. Spinks would have to get rugged and go searching, he'd have to demonstrate that chin. I think he would do it, but it wouldn't be pretty.
This is a good match up, and a tough one 2 call. Does Roy out speed Spinks and never allow Spinks to land more then one or two solid punches at a time, which we all know RJJ made a career of doing. Or does Michael drag him into a fight where he can use his physical advantages to catch Jones, Spinks needs to use his size, awkward style and "Jinx" (his right hand) to have a shot. If RJJ bangs with Michael then I pick Spinks, who had good knockout power at LTHW. But I don't think Roy will do that. I am going to pick Jones by Dec, even though a Spinks KO is very much a possibility.
Spinks would be far to dangerous. Jones would struggle with Spinks unorthodox style, and his average chin would not be able to stand up too long to the Jinx.
And what of Spinks's jab? I think that would be a more than suitable weapon for pressing the fight. Keep popping the jab, stalking, setting traps, and eventually he'll get him out of there with one. Spinks has this one in the bag.
Michael could do it all, once he warmed up. His jab turned Ranquello's face into a bloody mess, his hook nearly decapitated Marvin Johnson a few moments after a right to the body deflated Marvin, and his uppercut just about sent Celestine's head into orbit. He needed just one punch from either hand after he hit his stride, and it could come in mid ring, off the ropes, or, if Roy let his guard down for an instant, opportunistically, as Vonzell Johnson discovered. Michael could also get rough and filthy, especially with his elbows (as Johnny Davis found out).
Michael Spinks was the best lightheavyweight that I saw in my lifetime(I'm 48).He fought excellent comp in a great lightheavy era.Great power in either hand as well as unorthodox.Takes Jones out in 11.
Don't be surprised if an uppercut in close takes RJJ out. Marvin Johnson still can't forget that one.
