To be fair, much of that was down to Jones having acquired such a reputation by that point that many opponents just spent the whole night trying to lose a decision.
This would be a great fight. Jones would take the lead but slowly Spinks' speciality of missing hooks and uppercuts and following through with elbows would work it's magic. I really don't think Jones would enjoy this fight. Over 15 rounds I cannot see Jones winning. But, yes, if they fought ten times Jones would snatch a decision in some of them.
That also speaks volumes about the quality of opposition he was facing. Couldn't have ever seen a Yaqui Lopez or a Marvin Johnson fighting to survive, even if they were completely outgunned.
Not really. McCallum, Telesco, Harding, Gonzalez, Johnson, Del Valle, etc. None of them looked like they were simply fighting to survive. A few even managed a bit of success at one point or another, but were for the most part simply out-classed.
Agreed. And now we are going to put a guy in with Mike Spinks that dangles his left hand at his waist the whole fight. I'm not sure if Gene Tunney could survive Spinks fighting with that defense for 45 minutes. I know Jones and his whiskers do not. You have to hold your hands up against Michael Spinks. A must. This is the wrong guy for Jones to leave that big of an opening to.
