This would be the Spinks of the C00ney fight vs Peak Morrison. Would Spinks be able to knock out Morrison? Would he elect to box and try and stay away? How would Spinks win or lose?
Spinks was scared of Tyson that fight was over before the bell rang. Plus Tyson had good foot speed and closed in fast on Spinks. I don't think Tommy could. Could he catch Spinks and hurt him yeah, but Spinks was tough and determined. He weathers a few big combos and begins to take control around the 4th and finishes Tommy around the 9th
Good Lord, folks... if you can't see how much Tommy was lacking from his game, I just don't know what to say. He was great at knocking over has-beens but didn't have what it takes to compete with elite level fighters.
Morrison was faster than C00ney, and threw in combinations. He was also a true heavyweight. Spinks was a Lt Heavy. Yes he was great, but even C00ney was hitting him and had him hurt. Morrison had the combinations and speed to land his left Hook. Spinks is in for a long 6 rounds. After that I would favor Spinks, but unless he boxes and plays it safe, he will get caught. Morrison was a good Heavy.
Tommy was 6'2, ****ey was 6'7 with long arms. He also (don't laugh) had a better chin. Tommy gets stopped by all three guys ****ey lost to, but ****ey blows Bentt, or Ross Purity out of the ring.
Spinks was a very good light heavyweight who took advantage of a past his prime Larry Holmes, then clearly lost the re-match when he was hurt by Holmes a few times. I wouldnt even mention the C00ney fight. C00ney was on the bottle and very rusty. The Tyson fight tells you a lot about Spinks. He was in there vs. a hungry and active puncher, and got bounced out and embarrassed. Spinks was 32 when that fight happened, and called it quits after Tyson blew him out. He was badly exposed as a heavyweight, and he knew it. Morrison was every bit the puncher Tyson was to the head or body, and really would not have to worry much about Spinks' power. Fans forget Morrison had top end hand speed. I think Morrison has much smaller Spinks on the defenses and sparks him inside five rounds.
Tommy would also be embarrassed by Holmes. I doubt Tommy's management even wanted this fight in the 90s considering their night and day performances against Mercer. ****ey managed to give Holmes a tough, drawn out fight; this tends to be forgotten. ****ey was faded when he fought Spinks, but in all likelihood better than when he fought Foreman. His issue was that he couldn't find Spinks, unlike when matched against Foreman. Foreman fans like to spin this.
