Why do fighters want them? I mean Ricky Hattons and Tarvers IBO titles...and there are/were others around like the WBU etc - whats the point of them? Who on earth gives credence to a IBO, WBF or WBU champion? Its bad enough having IBF,WBA and WBC the last thing we need to detract from the credibility of boxing is more silly mickey mouse titles.
Tarver is absolutely completely and totally shot. There is no way he can win an ABC title. Hatton knows he can pull off any garbage fight and still sell out and make millions
i have no problem with the four recognized world titles (wbo wbc wba ibf) but it would'nt bother me if the IBHOF started to recognized the ibo title as a legit world championship because of the credibility the belt has gained over the years with hopkins floyd hatton wlad all having it at one point in their careers i just hate those other cornball titles like ibu,wbu and other titles like them
There should only be one title per devision. Why do we need more than one to recognize a champion in a weight class?
i can see why you might say boxing needs only one belt but here is why i support the four world title arrangement boxing has. if theres only one title per division it would be more difficult for top condenders to get a shot at the world champ, fighters duck other fighters now so imagine if one fighter is sole champion most would feel they dont have to face the top condenders and the reason why they'll say this "because he never had a world title or the world title" and that would be bad for us as fans and boxing.
A couple of months ago the WBA had 3 different Cruiserweight world champions atsch J.M. Mormeck (Super Champion) V. Hill (Regular) F.Arslan (Interim) Its bad enough with all these different world champions, let alone one organisation having 3 in one weight division atsch
I'm outta here but welcome to the board "Benny Blanco from the Bronx" Maybe we'll pick this up some other time. I hear the 5 o'clock horn...
but what about other fighters who are not world champs but are rated in the top 10 of their weight class how can we get them to fight other top 10 guys if they both dont have a world title whos gonna sanction them if neither guy has a world title because theres only one world champ? we need 4 world body sanctions IMO to get to see the fights we want to see.
If there was only one title, I believe that a majority of the time, top 10 fighters would be forced to fight top 10 fighters to move up. And the champion would have mandatories with one optional title defense a year against fighters in the top 10 or 15, but no one outside of that. We keep recognizing more and more titles. Where do we draw the line? People ask "why are Hatton and Tarver carrying around IBO and WBU belts?" and "Who recognizes these mickey mouse titles". In the early and mid 90s, the WBO was one of those titles. Before that, so was the IBF. Now they are recognized. In 10 years, the IBO will matter as well, since they have been awarding their belt to good fighters. It won't end.
One title per division is an idea that a lot of fans would wlecome. I'm with Benny in that I don't mind the 4 major ABC belts. Furthermore, it's would be pretty much impossible, from a practical standpoint, to have title per division.
So if there was only one recognized champion he wouldn't fight the contenders? I disagree. If everybody just say, followed The Ring belts, then it would be EASIER to tell who the real contenders are. You're also saying some great fighters would never be champions? Well you don't have to be a champion to be a great fighter. If a different age, there are fighters we would say were great, but enver were the real champion. Look at Ali's generation. Fighters like a George Chuvalo or Jerry Quarry were sometimes ducked, but generally just fought and did well against all the big names, but never quite made it through. These guys are still remembered! Lets fast forward to the recent past. Middleweight unification. Woulld it really matter if Trinidad didn't have a belt when he fought Hopkins, and instead was just the number one contender as rated by one ruling body? No it wouldn't. He wouldn't be remembered as a middleweight champion, but in a world where theres only one title belt - it wouldn't matter if he wasn't remembered as being an ABC champion. Being a top top top contender would be the same thing!
