And in most cases, in that scenario, being champion would mean more than it means now because in most cases, a great fighter would hold the one title, and to get it, you would have to beat him.
The IBF became a legitimate belt really quick. The other orgs tried to stop the WBO from becoming a major sanctioning body. Ironically, fans complained about their efforts to squash the WBO.
It was still considered a lower level title for a bit. The IBO is following the IBF's example of immediately awarding it's title to great fighters, but due to so many titles, it's taking longer for it to take hold. I don't see a reason that one title per division won't work. Other fighting sports do it, and boxing did it decades.
Ok, give me a brief proposal of how we could consolidate the 4 major sanctioning bodies into one. Also, if you can give me a reasonable way as to do this, how would you prevent other major sacntioning bodies from forming in the future?
I would have to have more information before I discuss consolidation of the ABC orgs and I am sure most here don't know enough about them to truly answer that. This doesn't mean there isn't a way to either get rid of them or have one body over the whole thing through consolidation. A union for boxers and promoters may help move things along. One title per division worked for years. The problem isn't that the concept doesn't work, but that there is an issue discarding the other belts. And when other sanctioning bodies pop up, ignore them and don't pay their fees, they will go bankrupt and dissolve on their own.
Thus the reason I said there should be a union for the boxers. Negotiate certain rights, fightt minimums, etc. They will stay if they feel they are being taken care of by the sport. Why do players stay in the NFL and not go to the other leagues? Or the NBA? Just like in MMA currently, you can leave the UFC if you like, but it doesn't benefit you to do so. And they consolidated Pride and UFC.
Hermit's Humunges Homginized Honor. Who wouldn't want that instead of the others? Damned, just realized 4H is taken..... atsch
They should be banned. Ideally there should be 1 belt per division but that will never happen. If it was just the main 4 then that would be a big improvement.
So basically, you're idea is to take thousands of independant contractors and turn them in into union workers. I don't see that working. That's like turning America into a socialist economy. The high earners will not want to join this union and have their earning potential slashed. The low earners will be strong armed by promoters, managers, and other fighters into not agreeing to unionizing. The NFL and NBA are leagues. Both of them had competition at one time and merged with their rival leagues. They are able to ward off competition due to the fact that the government gives them anti-trust excemptions. This allows them to opperate as a virtual monopoly. There are quite a few different leagues in MMA. UFC is the most popular, but their are others that are on Showtime, and VS. that have some good fighters. They also pay a fair amount compared to the UFC.
Well that's your opinion and I disagree with it. Many sports have unions. MLB has one and it certainly hasn't hurt their earnings potential. As far as I can tell, "low earners" are already at the mercy of the promoters and everyone else. You can have a union without cutting your earnings too much. Depending on the deal that the union gets, they may earn MORE if they can negotiate gate earnings and PPV percentages into contracts. You will just have to earn it. And there may be more to earn if the sport gets on track. I am aware of the other MMA leagues. And for the most part, they aren't very relevant in the big scheme of MMA, just like the AFL and the CFL aren't that important compared to the NFL. UFC and Pride were the top leagues, and now they are one. And it has made it even bigger, consolidating their titles has made for more great matches and in turn will bring in more money.
Well sure it 'works', but there is NO POINT to it. It helps nobody, wastes fighter's money paying sanctioning fee, and creates controversy. The reason we have so few legit champions these days is because everyone with a belt THINKS they are the real champ and therefore doesn't need to fight John Doe, the WBKLDU champion of the world. Also, what if theres a champ like say... W. Klitschko? IF he beats Sam Peter and is declared the champ by The Ring.... who will he fight next? The next contender? A mandatory title defense of course, but to defend WHICH title? WBA, WBB, WBC? Who knows? In short, they ****ing suck, I'm going to assassinate all the people who run and make the most money in the ABC groups! And also the BIGGEST reason why we aren't getting rid of them: Its not possible. They're independent groups. Its up to fighters to just forget about all of them and just fight for the Ring magazine rankings. But its not just the fighters of course, its promotors, state athletic commissions, and lastly: the fans. We, or I should say THEY have to forget about them. Some of the people here at ESB may be able to just freely say The WBO is **** (or whichever one they're all the same), but some recognize them. They don't give them MUCH great, but just sayin "Well at least Cotto has the WBA!", is still giving them TOO MUCH credit!
Why are you telling me this? I don't agree with the ABC orgs. And if there was a union for boxers where they could negotiate terms with one of the orgs to recognize ONLY their title for perhaps a collective agreement where they get certain things they feel are necessary and the Org. also got to keep some essential power, the other orgs would simply lose money and die out. I think this is a good starting point.
