I remember this fight clearly and thought PW gave Chavez a boxing lesson.

**** ref and worse judge. This was the worst decision I have ever seen. Whitaker won a minimum 9 rds.He tried to justify giving Chavez the 4th rd by taking it upon himself to deduct 2 points for the low blows from Whitaker. In professional boxing a judge can only deduct a point when ordered by the ref. He also mentioned he was given the job because he was a judge who favored flashy boxers and everything was set up for Whitaker to win. He is retired so he gets away with mentioning that now but if he talked like that when he was still active he would have never been given a job again.

Bull**** right there. With this you can tell he either is so full of himself that over 20 years ater the fact, he can't even admit that he scored that fight wrong, or was actually scoring in a malicious way and tries to hide behind the other two dreadful scorcards.

Contrast Vann to Larry O'Connell, who got even more stick for scoring Lewis-Holyfield I a draw. O'Connell was apologetic after the fight, despite the fact that quite a few in the press also scored it even, and admitted that even though he scored it as he saw it on the balance of opinion he was probably wrong.

Vann on the other hand continues to try and justify his card for Whitaker-Chavez, when there are very few who KSAB who agree with him.

Vann always seemed to enjoy the limelight a bit too much for a referee. I cringed when he was giving Lewis and Bruno his napoleon complex wannabe tough guy riot act, when he was about the size of Lennox' abdominal guard.

Certainly a character though, and he was a much better ref than he was a judge. His autobiography is worth a read.

Most sensible people had Whitaker 8-4 in rounds, minimum.

I remember when Whitaker hit Chavez down under the cup on purpose, then did it again! Whitaker should have had points taken away.............I remember when Ramirez beat Whitaker, Whitaker fell down on the canvas and was kicking his feet and banging his fists on the canvas like a spoiled child.......................Whitaker hit Chavez to the testicles on purpose because Chavez was getting to him, so he had to do something to stop his momentum.................I never liked to watch a Whitaker fight, his punches could not hurt a fly...............

I have always thought it was the refs job to tell the judges when to take a point.
