Yeah, that's the way I feel. That's what prompted me to make the thread. :good Great fight, and I couldn't really guess a winner.
How did he beat the best in every weight class ? He lost to an old Greb. Many accounts say he got a gift against Flowers. He lost to Latzo. He lost to Loughran. AT heavyweight he caught the always inconsistent Sharkey on a terrible night for a draw. He was destroyed by Schmeling .. Walker was a hell of a warrior but he did not dominate from welter to heavyweight .. he was able to compete in each at the highest level and that is a tremendous accomplishment ..
I think that we would have to credit him with being the best welterweight in the world for a time. He won the title from an all time great, and had a strong title reign. He was probably the best middleweight in the world after Greb retired, even if he might not have deserved the decision against Flowers. He was never the best light heavyweight in the world, though he beat hall of famers at that weight. If he had not shared an era with Loughran, it might have been a different matter. That is not exactly lucky for a light heavyweight aspirant. He was never the best heavyweight in the world, but his accomplishments at that weight are insane for a former welterweight. I think I am right in saying that only three lineal welterweight champions have defeated a lineal light heavyweight champion: Barbados Joe Walcott Mickey Walker Thomas Hearns Only one lineal welterweight champion has ever fought on even terms with a lineal heavyweight champion, and there were those who thought that Walker deserved the decision.
