Welterweight Walker, who lost to Greb, then I take Monzon. Walker beat Tiger Flowers for the Mdlwt title, defended it 3 times, then failed to capture the Lthvyweight title. From that point on, he was what we would call now a SuperMdlwt or small Lthvyweight and proceeded to start beating the frap out of bigger men. The bigger version of Walker I think Monzon would have a very difficult time in defeating.
Monzon never faced anyone of the calibre of Walker. I would give Mickey Walker a very good chance of winning this one. Look at how he was able to hang in there with light heavyweights and heavyweights. Could Monzon do the same? Perhaps . But I don't recall him doing it. Walker was a tough, strong dude.
Monzon unquestionably due to styles. I think he wins quite comfortably, though Walker is obviously no walk in the park.
Walker for my money. Monzons favoured tactics were tried out by many light heavyweights and heavyweights to no avail. This is the guy that Jack Sharkey couldnt impose his will on toe to toe.
I'd pick most top notch boxers who held a height and reach advantage over him, as it negated his style. Loughran beat him quite handily.
Loughran got on his bicycle and ran the whole fight like a scared rabbit. I would add that it was fairly close. Walker seemd to eat people who stood infront of him and tried to impose themselves at range, even heavyweights. That is perhaps the style he was most magnificent against. I dont intend to take Monzon for granted here but he more than has his work cut out.
Loughran boxed well for sure but he also moved. He didnt stand in front of Wlaker and try to manhandle him. Bigger fighters than him came to greif doing that. We also have to consider that Loughran is a top 10 all time light heavyweight but he was still forced to use these tactics. Now if I had Monzon, Hagler and Hopkins in front of me and I had to hand pick one of them to fight Walker I would not see Monzon as the best option. I would probably go for Hopkins.
I'd favor them all. Hagler was great against those who came forward, and extremely versatile in his prime, especially with his jolting jab. Hopkins I'd also favor, due to his movement, defense, counter-punching, and versatility. And Monzon I'd favor due to his reach, jab, and overall length. I think Monzon thrived against the pressure styles because he was able to keep the fight at his range so well, and his defense is greatly underrated.
