Any of you gents know anything about these two fights?

I've read in multiple places about the Walker decision and have heard it described as everything from "disputed" to "robbery". Any thoughts?

The McTigue fight seems to have been less contriversial, but has still stirred up uncertainty in one or two corners. Anyone know anything about this one?

Finally, Flowers was DQ's versus Rosenbloom in October of 26. This seems desperately out of character for the "Georgia Deacon". Anyone have details?

For ten minutes after Joe Humphries made his announcement of the verdict the crowd stood and yelled its disapproval. It exceeds even the Dundee-Bernstein decision in the old Garden. Then special officers began clearing the building, but the demonstration continued. Even after the crowd had started out of the arena little groups of spectators, ignoring the commands of the specials, stood about, discussing the verdict and ridiculing it.

In the records the decision of course will be credited to McTigue. But every one who saw the fight will remember that Flowers actually was the winner. He slapped, cuffed, pushed and mauled McTigue about in vigorous manner through the greater part of a bout which was lacking in the spectacular and in interesting fighting. McTigue, fighting almost exclusively on the defensive, was in a shell for the major portion of the thirty minutes of action.

Thanks very much for this info Senya. Is this entire post about the McTigue decision? I had no idea it was so ridiculed, I thought the Walker decision was the harsher one...

I have read somewhere that after the terrible decision for Walker against Flowers, Tiger did not protest. A newspaper wrote: "It is nice to see a negro that knows his place".
    I don´t like that!

While almost everybody thought Flowers deserved to get the decision against Walker, but there are some points given by the referee, to ponder. Flowers is one of my favorite fighters, but he could be fighting very dirty at times.

Flowers slapped and cuffed with his open glove after a warning before the start of the fight to hit with the closed fist.

Flowers sought to claim a foul in the fourth round, but fought viciously when Yanger refused to recognize a foul; that Flowers's attempt to claim a foul was unsportsmanlike.

Flowers opened the gash over Walker's left eye by a butt, and that, by "flicking" with the open glove, reopened the wound in each succeeding round.

Flowers also was guilty of using the heel of his gloves, an illegal blow which should not be counted in the scoring of points.

That Walker scored a clean knockdown, displayed aggressiveness and was doing all the clean boxing.

That Flowers was guilty of sticking the thumbs of his gloves in Walker's eye.

Excellent stuff Senya, I had no idea that Flowers was so naughty.

Do you have a bottom line as far as the Walker fight goes?

As I said, almost everyone thought decision was bad, even the chairman of Illinois commission, while agreeing that the referee's decision was honest (no fix or bias or anything), but wasn't just.

Very interesting Senya13! It's great to have a little more info on this fight...Did Walker score one knockdown or two? I recall hearing that it was a disputed decision in Walker's favor.

I'd have to say the Greb/Flowers fights must have been extremely rough bouts.
