Trying to take back the board, one decent non-heavyweight fight at a time... This content is protected
His career longevity is unbelievable. He fought, at a respectable level none the less, all the way until 2004... A 22 year career, with 858 rounds to his name. That's substantially more than Muhammad Ali.
and he didn't start fighting until he was 27. Does anybody know why he didn't turn pro until then? Amateur fighter until then?
He fought Buck Smith three times. Between their first and second fight, a mere two years, Smith fought over 50 times. In other news, how do all three of their fights end in no decisions that appear to went the distance?
Edit - Found my answer from an old newspaper archive. Basically they fought a no decision fight, so they wouldn't effect their rankings within different organizations.
If you haven't seen Brazier-Kevin Pompey, do look it up. Pretty fun, with a somewhat unexpected ending.
Great in mentioning "Buck Smith". He was from Oklahoma City, OK 181 wins 20 losses 2 draws. (121 KOs) (9 KOs) Terry Atlas probably was yelling about him fighting on the Midwest Circuit with little, or ZERO, Boxing Commission oversight.
Brazier had a background in Martial Arts ( was a black belt ) He began boxing at 24 and had 31 am fights losing 12.
I have a ton of respect for Harold Brazier. He was very solid technically. I read an interview where he said that he focused on the technical aspects of boxing; he realized he wasn't the fastest guy or the hardest puncher, but he could strive to be technically correct and that would compensate for a lack of natural advantages. Buck Smith is a pretty good guy.
Buck is one of my favorite fighters! His stories of fighting multiple times a day under different alias' is incredible to me. I also loved his upset left hook from hell on the road against Kirkland Laing. A real one punch knockout. He also upset a former Olympic medalist who's name escapes me at the moment.
Yes, I think that's him. I've seen the fight, I remember Smith pinning Wangila against the hell and then unleashing a flurry of shots from hell on him. A hell of a puncher in my opinion, he laid out Laing as well as Jones did. Why do you like him?
