Walker at all weights apart from Heavy, where, despite Holy being past his best, I felt Toney put in one of the best performances of his career.

 

Yeah it was strange that after a 7 year hiatus from being a world class fighter he returned to for 50 pounds above his best weight. But for a 3 year period he did look great again at hw.

 

It's Toney after all - it's surprising he didn't return 100 pounds above his best weight.

 

Toney has much more in common with Schmelling stylistically with those counter rights

 

Which "great" did Walker "beat" ?
He has a few decision wins and a 1st rd TKO over some of d better , not even d best fighters of his poor era , d green part in his record is primarily on d expense of bums .
I bet some of his fights were staged like d common of his era .

 

So great they were
Supposing they weren't staged , it should still b noted that those , whomever they were , were not notable punchers , like WSJ cherrypicking Joey Maxim and still losing (Walker did lose 2 some of them) .

Toney would not have been stopped vs Schmelling 4 what its worth ,
Schmelling was a weak titlist , more dangerous than Sharkey but still weak . Johnny Ruiz has a stoppage win over Fres Oquendo which is more impressing than almost every win by Schmelling , the Johnny Ruiz would not have been stopped by those who stopped Schmelling , possibly not even by Louis .

That era was ridden with staged fights .

 

I should point out that it is widely reported that walker's victory over flower's was a massive robbery.

However given flower's immediate departure from the division and walker's already great resume, walker was still regarded as the best mw out there so his championship claim was quite strong.

 

Or how many A Level technicians did Walker beat and what is his record against the better technical defensive boxers.

I've read the same but do you have sources for that?

Let's add this to Walker's performance against quicker defensive technicians:

Greb - shut out loss
Bigger Schmelling - dominant loss
Loughran - close loss
Flowers - (gift decision)
38yo Britton - 1-1
Bigger Sharkey - draw
Latzo - 1-1
Rosenbloom - 1-1

How many of those are as skilled as Toney, as quick as Toney and have defensive skills on the level of Toney? And how many hit as hard for that matter? I'd reckon Toney to be better than all bar perhaps Schmelling/Greb, although with lack of footage there are question marks

So basically any contender in the 20s is 'great', really?

And the fact that Flowers fought very dirty fight.
