could someone educate me about monzon a little. i obviously know the name but i'm not as familiar with his achievements as i am with the likes of hagler. thanks.
He retired on an 82-fight unbeaten streak, won the Middleweight crown by stopping Hall-of-famer Nino Benvenuti, and had the most impressive reign in the division's history. 14 defenses against guys like Emile Griffith, Rodrigo Valdez, Benvenuti again, Bennie Briscoe, Jose Napoles, Tony Licata, Tony Mundine, etc. Monzon was arguably the greatest ring general of all-time. There is nothing flashy about him, but he did everything right and controlled everyone he fought once he reached his peak. Great jab and sense of distance and timing, very accurate puncher with solid power, difficult to hit cleanly and a great chin when he was hit. Guys like Robinson, Hagler, and Hopkins would make it close, but I favor Monzon over every Middleweight I've seen.
A question I always wondered, but could never answer myself.. These are two of my favorite boxers of all-time and definitely two of the best middleweights ever..
the only time the couldve fought was in 76-77 and at that time hagler wasnt ready for a fight like that so id hav to say monzon
