I've seen his name pop up many times, but do not know much about him. Could someone please share some thigns about him?
He was known as "the fastest fighter in the world" in his day, a phenom like Roy Jones or Mayweather. One of his most famous tactics was to constantly switch back and forth between southpaw and orthodox stances. He won a portion of the flyweight title, but failed in an effort to unify it against fellow champ Frank Genaro, which ended up being a draw. He spent most of the rest of his career fighting above the weight. His weight ballooned, and as he gradually moved up to bantam and then to feather, he became increasingly vulnerable, although he still remained a respected contender wherever he fought. Eventually, he sucked himself back down to 112 to defend his title against Small Montana, and (perhaps predictably) was beaten on points. He then moved up to 126 and made a serious campaign for a shot at the FW title, but his efforts were derailed by a crushing upset loss to an up-and-comer named Henry Armstrong. After that he gradually descended into journeyman status and eventually ended up losing more often than winning before finally retiring. Here is some footage of Wolgast from one of his several fights (not sure which one though) with future lightweight champ Juan Zurita: [yt]rr_c4FaGrsg[/yt] Incidentally, he takes his name (which is an alias) from the lightweight champ Ad Wolgast, who was apparently his idol.
