Headlining a card in Merida, Yucatán, Mexico airing on Azteca Sieta on November thirtieth, Saturday night (technically it'll be December 1st / the wee hours of Sunday morning when the main event starts - as the coverage begins at midnight EST / 11pm local time). This is step three in a "get back on the horse" campaign at 135lb for 33 year old Berchelt. The former WBC super featherweight champion has scored two consecutive stoppages at lightweight since losing to Jeremia Nakathila there in March of last year. In terms of important bouts, however, El Alacrán is on a two loss skid - and his last success was over five years ago when he knocked out Jason Sosa om a final consummated title defense before Óscar Valdez ended his reign. He is still dangerous, but the question is whether the Scorpion packs quite the same potent sting he did in his peak at 130lbs for half a decade from Escalante through Sosa (2014 until 2019). In the other corner we have a tough & slippery Argentine southpaw who invariably comes up short in all of his own important bouts - although he mostly gives a good account of himself. To date only Liam Wilson has really whitewashed him, and nobody stops him clean (one corner retirement after the 6th, and one throwing of a white towel in the final round comprise his only times being halted). I remember being particularly impressed at him overcoming a rocky start to run then unbeaten Filipino-Norwegian prospect Bernard Angelo Culpa Torres very close a couple of years ago in Madrid on the fourth leg of Maravilla Martínez's comeback homestand in Spain.
What do we think is Berchelt's endgame, barring a banana peel here? It would seem the path to reaching the division's apex would necessitate going through one all-Mexican banger showdown or another - with either Zepeda or the Valdez-Navarrete II winner.
The co-main event pits youngsters José Israel Ramírez "Azulito" Maciel and Ángel Hafit "Lobo" Talavera Carrillo against each other in the Zanfer Promotions event's only 12-rounder. "Little Blue" Maciel is traveling almost the full length of the country to battle the local house fighter. "The Wolf" boasts a curious stat, though - his record is 14-1 and he only has one single victory by stoppage to his credit. Rare to see that positive a mark with that low a KO ratio.
No published odds yet anywhere, but Berchelt by stoppage and over 5.5 (or even 6.5) rounds are the good bets IMO.
Wth...this apparently started by like 8:30pm local time in Merida. This content is protected I was just about to fire up a RBR thread, oh well.
