Yeah. Sports are incredibly political in Ghana, as is everything. The best don't get the opportunities. It is about tribal connections, but as I wrote on the Habib Ahmed thread, the government over there is starting to pay the right people over here to get their fighters ranked highly.

Ahmed is an interesting possibility though. Muslims don't get **** in Ghana, it's a Christian country, so for him to get a title shot, he might have some real talent. I was shocked when I read that a Muslim from Ghana was getting a title shot. that's wall all Ghanaian fighters have English/African names. Nelson, Quartey, Konadu, etc.

So then I guess we can extrapolate that for guys like Ike Quartey or Silence Mabuza (not Ghanaian, but I'm going to assume these problems with tribalism are not endemic to just the one nation, but close enough to Pan-African) to machete their way through all those entanglements and emerge on the international scene means they had to be REALLY special, and jump through more hoops than most of their world class peers in other countries?

Yordan (significantly post-Vetyeka, where I thought he looked already on the downslide) dropping Awuku is enough to convince me that Berchelt will destroy him.

Yes! For a really well-respected world champ to come from Africa he is a tremendous athlete. Quartey was a dominant world champ, and he had ONE FRIGGIN HAND. He would have been one of the greatest of all time had he grown up here. Everything in Ghana has to do with connections and bribes. Nigeria is worse because the tribes there have a deeper hatred for each other.

Yeah, preaching to the choir here, Bazooka was my #1 favorite boxer for a number of years (in between MAB and Mijares/Kessler). Caught some really rough breaks, both with international boxing politics (to say nothing of the domestic stuff he went through early on, which I know nothing of but I'm sure was a struggle) and on the judges' cards. Robbed thrice (I don't agree with Ike that he got screwed vs. Vargas, though it was close - but certainly he deserved the nod over Maestrito López, ODLH, and Forrest) - and the Winky fight should have never happened. I was a pretty big Wright fan until that disgrace, too.

Yeah, he's done pretty well after boxing, from what I understand, has a couple of hotels in Ghana. Same with Nelson.

    Well...that happened, I guess.

It took Berchelt about 90 seconds to figure out how to land on someone that was both a southpaw and taller (having never faced that combination before; his previous lefty opponents were all his own height or less), and then it was just a matter of working that lumber saw until ...tim-ber!
