Good performance by garcia last night. His power did carry up vargas is tough and he dropped and hurt him multiple times.

This was a highly entertaining card. Several great fights, starting with the Martinez-Harris bout. Boy, that Harris can take a beating and keep on coming. Martinez is a beast at that weight, though. Garcia is just a superior fighter to Vargas. Kudos to Vargas for ending the fight on his feet. I thought Garcia was definitely going to stop him after the first KD. I see a number of people are calling for a Usyk-Parker fight. Careful what you wish for. Yes, Usyk is more talented and fundamentally sound but can he take Parker's size and power?

I don't share your opinion that Mikey "struggled" with Broner, but I do agree with much of your assessment of his capabilities (ie fighter with good power, great fundamentals but also with certain limitations).

I doubt that very seriously. Apart from a knockdown of no consequence to Martinez some years back, MG has always demonstrated very durable whiskers.

That said, I wouldn't be the least bit surprised if Pac bounces his way to a comfortable (if competitive) decision. His foot and hand speed would be the difference.

Seriously, something must be said about the scoring of that fight last night by some of you. There's not many ways you can score it. Half of it was remarkably clear cut.

Rounds 1-4 Vargas won, there is no other possible way you can score them. Rounds 11 an 12 were close, but quite clear, Mikey never hurt Jessie in either, Jessie outworked him with ease in both.

So... that's SIX fairly clear rounds to Jessie. So literally the best card anyone of you should be able to come up with for Mikey is 114-113, not much wiggle room on that.

Now, there were 2 other ridiculously close rounds that were up for debate. The 9th and 10th, they could both go either way, the volume was clearly in Jessie's favor, Mikey landed the more eye catching shots, but very few of them, so I have no issue with anyone scoring them either way. But that's it.

I did give Vargas the 1st-4th and 11th-12th ...and you're right, all six of those are fairly straightforward to score (a couple of them maybe closer than others but all clear for Vargas).

As for the 9th and 10th yeah, too much of the volume from Vargas was creampuff stuff for me as he was still in his refractory period from that beating he took in the 5th-8th. Under the old amateur rules yeah he probably did touch Mikey a good deal more, but hardly anything he landed after the 5th was the least bit damaging or effective until the 11th, IMO. Whereas he was getting clipped with heavy shots by Mikey, even if he was being economical to a fault. You're right, sort of a 'pick what you like' in that pair of rounds.

We're not that far off. I definitely get why you had it for Vargas, and if the judges had turned in your score x3 it would have been waaaaay easier to swallow than 116-111 Mikey on two.

The ringside unofficial scorer gave Mikey the 3rd round. Garcia landed some great right hands in that round. Vargas landed some good shots right at the end of the round that sent Mikey back to the ropes but was that little flurry at the end enough to swing the round? Certainly Mikey was winning that round before that late flurry by Vargas so at worst that's a toss up round. That's definitely a round that could and probably should be given to Mikey. Rounds 2 and 4 were pretty close as well.

According to Compubox Mikey outlanded Jessie in the 11th by 2 punches, and Jessie outlanded Mikey by a single punch in the 12th. I don't put too much stock into Compubox numbers, and Jessie was outworking him but how many of Jessie's shots were landed clean? Both were close rounds that were hard to score. But watching it live I did get the sense that Jessie did enough to win those.

Really fun little fight, albeit one-sided. González showing levels here. Seriously, I love Román, a true fan favourite. Like honestly, I don't know how can not be a fan of Román. Anyways, Fanboying aside, this was a brilliant performance. Chocolatito showing his athletic capabilities and ATG skills here, and given he's still going after such a career is insane. He didn't skip a beat here and looked as good as ever.

    Bring on the Gallo rematch!
