Any thoughts on this interesting match up? Two contrasting styles between matador and the bull. Always wondered why Miguel Canto and Guty Espadas never fought considering they were both title holders around 1977 and it would have been a good time for both of them to face each other in a unification title bout. Espadas would have matched up well with his more aggressive all action style against the more technical savvy Canto. Personally I think this would have been an entertaining all-Mexican Flyweight showdown had it took place.
Id take Canto by a clear, but hard fought decision. Espadas just isn't of the calibre of pressure fighter which would beat Canto imo.
This would be an astonishing fight because Canto would actually have the size advantage for once in his life (not a reach advantage, though). I think it would play out a bit like the battles between Espadas and Alfonso Lopez. Espadas had good handspeed but wasn't very hard to hit as he tried to bore in. Canto would pile up points and Espadas would have only intermittent success landing his hard, quick hooks. He might take the advantage late in the fight, but he wouldn't hurt Canto as badly as he did Lopez, and he'd be too far behind to make much of a difference. Canto wins about 9-6, with Espadas's late surge raising some questions about whether Canto is beginning to show his age.
