Mexico's and Puerto Rico's greatest pure boxing technician in small statures. Both were very similar; diminutive who were always outsized by their opponents, couldn't crack an egg so they relied mostly on their out-boxing technique and finesse, magnificent defense that were shades of Willie Pep, and made several successful defenses. Who was the more accomplished champion and who do you think displayed the better skill sets of the sweet science?
Anyone remember the hub bub of Calderon tooling De La Hoya in preparation for the Pacquiao fight? Also, poor pick for a sparring partner to prepare for Pacquiao.
Calderon was never in Canto's class. He was more of a tiny poor man's version of Vilomar Fernandez or Sammy Serrano.
Miguel Canto had a tremendous amount of boxing skill. I saw him fight Orlando Javierto in person at the Sports Arena in Los Angeles. But Canto was a feather-fisted fighter, to put it mildly. - Chuck Johnston
Or rather it's absurd to rank him anywhere near Canto for skill or resume. Calderon is loved, but to put him on that level is to grossly overrate him.
