Yesterday, I watched a boxing marathon showcasing Cotto's awesome fights that my friend burned for me on DVD. I've watched several Cotto fights before but yesterday was the 1st time I really paid attention to Cotto....and guess what, he grew on me, and then wow, now I'm his fan now... I've always thought Cotto's skills as somewhat common (not that i thought he was an ordinary fighter, ive always thought he's great, its just that he gets hit too much even before the margo fight so his style did not capture me right away) despite his impressive resume (you know what I mean), but my perception changed yesterday. Before, i've always thought of him as a blood and guts warrior who has beaten guys like mosley and judah at the tail end of their careers but after watching his fights with bailey, torres, branco, quintana, mosley, judah and clottey with an open and focused mind... the time i've spent in my room (4 or 5 hrs i believe) did not turn into waste. First fight I've watched was him against Clottey. I've already seen this fight before but I was not able to catch the first few rounds. It was amazing how he was able to dig deep in this fight, despite having a big cut above his left eye. He also knocked down clottey via a short left hook in round one, but the ghanaian is very durable. Despite what other people think about the fight, imo it is an impressive win, and he did enough offensively to beat clottey (I actually picked clottey to win this fight). After watching his hard earned battles against judah and mosley (and even torres), and the way he picked apart a speedster like quintana, I was turned into a fan, my jaw dropping everytime he throws and punch and lands crisp combination, being wowed by the fact that he is also tough and the way he uses his strong upper body. The way he cuts off the ring through his underrated footwork is a thing of beauty, reminds me of the way Julio Cesar Chavez used to stalk his opponents in order to find a way to land a perfect body shot. He's the type of fighter who grows on you, he is painful to watch at first but he is a man who has an unquenchable desire to win. I've grown to love the savagery of Cotto, the way he stalks his opponent as if he is not intimidated, and his big heart when it comes to challenging situations. After watching his fights, I was astonished at how the **** he lost to a guy like Margarito.... and not to sound like a dick, but I believe that AM used the plaster of paris in order to beat him, i mean a guy who is not known for his big power, c'mon ... The way I see it, in his upcoming bout with pac, If pac's punches can't affect Cotto, he is ****ed, and he'll get knocked out brutally. That's why I look forward to seeing this fight, in order to know how far can pac go in his quest for another achivement. But Cotto is a tough customer and he seems to be serious in his training too. As a pinoy, I slightly lean towards pac against cotto, but I just hope they put up a good fight but not to the point that they'll be endangering their careers in the process. Given their styles, its very possible that they will be trading with each other once they think they can handle each others power. Good luck to both. This is also my appreciation thread for one of my fave boxers, Miguel Cotto, a man born to punish in the ring. This content is protected
My family is Mexican and I don't think they've ever admired a Puerto Rican as much as they do Cotto. He's the reason my first live fight will be on the 14th of November.
aren't appreciation thread supposed to happen after a fighter gets KO'd or retires? He's a good guy. Nothing to hate about him. I wish him nothing but the best.
I havnt been a fan of a fighter this much since Fernando Vargas.... and for once, a fav of mine is in a superfight, and i think he will actually win! lol... War Cotto.
i guess i just wanna show my appreciation to the guy:goodhe deserves props for what he has achieved so far
He really is a fighter that has to grow on you. I've followed him since he was 14-0. A guy from school told me about him. I was having my Barrera fan craze during those days. But I remember I told him my favorite boxer of all time was Tito Trinidad and he said the guy to look out for is Miguel Cotto. I said with a nod and a grimmace...okay...fine I will. I asked when his next fight was. He told me against Rocky Martinez...I missed the fight, but read about it and it seemed like he should be interesting enough to watch. Then I saw him against Demetrio Ceballos and was pretty impressed, but not blown away. Then I watched him against Carlos Maussa when he was undefeated and both being 17-0...and THAT caught my attention how beautifully he handled that fight. And from there forward my love for Cotto grew with every fight reaching it's absolute pinnacle when I saw him outclass Shane Mosley, a man who I actually thought was going to win. He is a guy that never had the need to completely talk down to his opponents, when his opponents look down on him. He fought with heart and will and a focus that is just unfounded and rare in this sport. He IMO is THE man to watch. He is the epitome of what boxing should be. The art and dramatization of the sweet science. His style isn't poor or incredibly shitty relying solely on chin and heart, nor is it beyond defensive that it makes it boring. He has the perfect style that says "Kill or Be Killed"...and he didnt come for the latter. I don't know if I'd be as big of a boxing fan as I am now if it wasn't for Cotto. And for that...I send my appreciation in the appropriate thread.
I like Cotto, but I'd appreciate if he gets the hell knocked out him on Nov 14th. If he wins he'll ruin some huge bets that I have for a Mayweather/ PAC showdown.
I've done my share of hating in the past, but I still think that Miguel Cotto is the biggest fight for Floyd Mayweather and was the heir apparent to the p4p championship. I'm upset because if he just would've beaten that f*ckin bum Margarito, there would be no talk of Pacquiao .... Pacquiao would get his just due, but Cotto was on his way 100% ... he was the one that was supposed to be set up to fight Mayweather in the biggest fight in history and I still think that is the case as I have him beating Pacquiao in their fight in Nov.
