Miguel is the man!!! Hope he gets the rematch and upsets Margo (although I like Margo too)! He'll need improvement and guts of course, Margo's style is completely wrong for him... GO COTTO!!!:happy WAR COTTO!!!
Cotto, in his mind, might see this as a 'nothing to lose' scenario. I've thought of that. But again, ^ this idea that you have that Cotto can pile up points and then clinch is based on what was seen from Margarito in the first fight. If Margarito comes out guns blazing, much faster, Cotto might not get that chance. That's what I'm saying in the first place.
I can't wait to see the rematch but I would first like to see Cotto in a warm up preferably against Cintron which would just sweeten the storyline. I also would like to see Margo try and unify and since the prospects for a Williams rematch seem to be slim in the near future, I'd like to see Margo take on Clottey. This semi tournament senario brings us one step closer to an undisputed champion.
I've seen a few others say that too. Am I the only one here who thinks Cintron can be very dangerous if taken lightly, or if he is considered as a "warm up" fight? I mean, the guy can bang, and he's only lost to one man. Sure, Margo has his number, but is it fair to say Cintron is easy prey for the rest of the top welters just because of that?
As a Cotto fan I'm trying not to consider that possibility. It IS plausible of course. A lot would depend on Cotto's activity level. Margarito didn't start out hot but I think some of that has to do with Cotto's jab and just all out relentless ability to kick things off. At the same time, I think the most beneficial thing Cotto could do is change trainers...but I'm not betting on it.
Both fighters were at their best, and AM prevailed. Changing trainers will not help him. Habits are hard to break. Cotto can try new things like rolling better with shots, not backing up so much, using his hand speed to his advantage. The biggest change that has to happen is his defense. The fact that Cotto lacks a natural right hand to counter AM is why AM always beats Cotto. Two fists are always better than one. AM is a very underrated defensive fight, and a smart fighter. It looks like he is getting hit, but none of the major shots his opponents throws lands a lot. Once AM sees he can land a specific punch, he tries it over and over like a true champion does until it doesn't work anymore, and then he tries something else. I just can't see Cotto beating AM unless his defense improves. If Floyd Sr. trains Cotto, and helps him with his defense, there is a minute chance he can outpoint AM, but imo that is slim to none.
Cotto's defense was vastly improved (as was his boxing skill) heading up tot he fight with Margo. Then it all unraveled and his crew just looked at each other like "Well...what the **** does he want us to do?" The corner just fell apart as Margarito rose up...something I feel like happens way too often when Cotto got in tough. As he unraveled so did his corner...where the benefit of a great trainer would've done a more prevalent job of trying to hold things together. Freddie Roach, Nacho, Yoel Judah etc etc etc If Cotto really wants to give it one more go against Margarito, I think he needs to get a better trainer. He and Evangelista have had nothing but trouble going back to the Judah fight...and I think they've done all that they can for one another. It's always possible that Margarito is Barkley and Cotto is Hearns. Some guys just beat the other guy 9 times out of 10. If Cotto really wants to push Margarito, It would start with a better camp.
Cotto can box better but can he take the same amount of clean hits? He won't ever be able to handle what it would takes. Margarito wins another dog fight like Trinidad/Vargas.
Good post. Very good post. :good I'm of the belief that a trainer can't change things over night. Cotto trusted his uncle, so I don't know. I do know this. In a nutshell, the tools are there, the smarts are there, the right hand has to get better, and the defense has to get receive an overhaul. With that said, can Cotto win? He has a minute chance, but I just don't think so. It is not bad to not be able to beat that one guy that has your number if AM has his number...and that was a good thought by you with the Barkley-Hearns quip. Look at Shane, he lost to two guys in rematches, and he is probably a H.O.F fighter.
True, I won't underestimate Cotto's ability to snake charm his opposition into less action. Miguel has a proven track record of doing subtle things that cause his opposition to underperform. He could likely do it to Margarito again - at least, I like his chances of that happening better than most fighters. I also agree with your feeling about trainers. Definately.
Well a change in trainers did wonders for Chico against Casamayor in their 2nd fight. Wlad became a tremendous fighter when he and Manny Steward hooked up. I do agree that things can't be changed overnight...but with a fight or two before a Margo fight in June/July...he can do enough to fix the major massive gap in his defense (straight right hands) to give himself a much better shot.
