The will to go beyond your limits to train your head and body for a rematch has to be conquered. Good post witht the "amount of hits" line. The torture of being able to use your defense to create offense has to be conquered. Cotto just has to go to the body even if he finds it difficult. That comes with training. He now knows he can't go at AM, so he has to build a game plan of defense, little movement, more turning, and hard/sharp/fast combos with little movement and more defense. This sound a like a lot to overcome lol, but I saw a number of rematches where one guy dominated the first fight only to be beat in the rematch. Larios-Vasquez, Benn-Eubank, Norris-Brown.
Whatever can give him a better mind set always helps. Boxing is 95% mental, 5% physical. If a new trainer can provide that comfort zone, so be it. I'm not against a new trainer. If I didn't think Cotto could win, I'd tell you. Cotto CAN win, I just don't think he will. But I like the fact that he wants the rematch. True champs do rematches win or lose.
With a better trainer he can limit the number of flush shots he takes. Granted he's going to get ht but the only way to put Margarito into any sort of defensive is to head into the lions den and give a little to get a little. Margarito is the sort of fighter who fights like he's got four hands. It's like you're always getting hit at some point in time during the fight. If Cotto is going into the fight worried about getting hit, he shouldn't bother with it.
Oh no believe me, I'm not suggesting a new trainer gives Cotto the fight. I just think a new atmosphere is needed around Team Cotto right about now, starting from the top to the bottom. It's the sort of move he HAS to make if he want's a shot. Even if the shot is minimal.
San, do you think Cotto fans are going to agree with you that AM wasn't at his best, and Cotto was?:huhAM's track record against the very best shows he starts slow. Williams, Clottey and Cotto. It's just how AM fights, and that isn't a knock.
How familiar with Margarito's career are you? That was by far one of his worst performances. Margarito was much better in the Williams fight as well as the Clottey fight. No question. If not for Cotto's lack of durability Margarito would have lost that fight going away - because Margarito didn't catch up to Cotto but a few times.
Couldn't of said it better. :good Sometimes it brings back memories of the Duran, Sugar, Hearns and Hagler days... Just the smell of good old boxing in the air.
Winning a rematch against top competition... is what makes excellent fighters, potential future greats !!
Would have been nice is Floyd Jr. had their "Dare to be great" mentality rather then DLH's "Dare to be supa rich" train of thought.
San, what kind of question is that? AM lost to Williams. He looked like crap against Clottey. Even AM's people knew that Cotto would win early rounds, and that AM would have to just keep trucking. There is no "if not for Cotto's lack of durability". AM knew it would take time and patience to break Cotto down, and he did. AM isnot the same fighter he used to be. He used to dance and move a lot more when he was younger and then lunge in with hard shots. He is gettng older. He fought Cotto exactly how you had to fight Cotto. He wasn't going to go in and dominate fromt he start. The way he started in his last couple of fights against the very best he has shown this to be true.
