Not a good comparison in my opinion.
Cotto was not nearly as rushed as Vargas, not even close.

Why are you laughing? He has more wins, against equally and better competition including two time conqueror over Vargas, Shane Mosley. Throw out the Wright fight Vargas flat out lost that one. Please enlighten me

    yep.

Vargas certainly fought better competition but in terms of wins?

well, as already correctly stated.. that win over Winky was pretty controversial amongst most boxing fans.

other than that, who he got?

    Campas,
    Ike Quartey,
    Castillejo
    Raul Marqez - XD.

    vs. Cotto:

-Many good but not great 140lb'ers.
    -Ricardo Torres
    -Quintana
    -Judah
-Malignaggi when Malignaggi actually looked good & was thought of as Naseem Hamed's successor (minus the KO power ofcourse!)
    -Mosley
    -Clottey (*)

Certainly Cotto has better wins & is it not wins that count most?

Cotto should've chased down Hatton in Manchester.
Other than being a great fight. Would've done a lot to aid his cause & make this a non-issue.
(i mean, if a win over our boy Ricky helps vastly up both Floyd & Manny's stock.. then why not -- other than the fact that Cotto tended to go down quite a bit at 140!)

You forgot his olympic conquerer Abdulaev. That was a hell of a fight. Corley and Bailey arent to shabby either. Losing doesnt enhance Vargas' resume in this case. A longer list consisting of solid comp does in Cotto's.

First of all, if Vargas "flat out" lost to a purely prime Winky Wright, which he CLEARLY did not, then Cotto "flat out" lost to a clearly past his best, hit or miss, underperforming Shane Mosley. To go on top of that you make reference to the shelled out version of Vargas that lost to Mosley - like that was ****ing Fernando Vargas.. PLEASE.

THIS CRAP is why I was laughing. You didn't need to respond, bud.

    yep, that's true.

however, Cotto's list of p4p greats fought doesn't compare to Vargas'!

    Winky, Tito, Oscar, Mosley TWICE!

vs. what? Mosley? + Pacquiao later this year.

(don't get me wrong. I agree Cotto has surpassed El Feroz already. I'm just exploring this question of competition faced!)

I dont think Vargas could ever beat Mosley personally. LOL Mosleys fight with Cotto was as close as Vargas' fight with Winky??? I dont think so. I also dont think Mosley is as far past his best as you do. Especially considering they both fought just about the same version of Mosley, and Mosley stopped Vargas on both occasions.
    When was Vargas "Fernando Vargas"??

Cotto has probably surpassed Vargas in terms of career accomplishments. Like everyone else has said Vargas was pushed much faster than Cotto has been. Vargas' win over Winky probably surpasses any win of Cotto's but Cotto has much more depth to his list of opponents. Vargas may have fought a much better list of fighters but when you look at his fights with Winky, DLH, Trinidad, Quartey, Mosley, and Mayorga then you see his record against those guys is 2-5. I don't see too many similarities in their careers and I think Cotto is the better fighter.

Well I dont think fighting and losing to a bunch of ATG's enhances your legacy. That would make Lionel Butler a great heavyweight.
Its about the wins. Vargas was a good fighter, coming out of the olympics and seeing him regularly in the gym I thought he might be a great fighter, but Main Events knew something was up with him, and thats probably why they sped his career along. Like I said earlier, I always though Vernon Forrest was ready much quicker for a title fight, yet they held him back for alot longer, and I think it was because it had a lot to do with the character of each fighter. Vargas wasnt too bright outside the ring.

If Vargas beat Winky, then Cintron beat Martinez. :nut

That was a gift decision. Close but clear win for Winky.

.....And he starts a sentence like that with an 'LOL' and ends it with a laughing smilie. CLASSIC. :rofl:rofl:rofl:rofl:rofl

If you were a serious boxing fan ten years ago - which I doubt - you wouldn't talk this way. PERIOD.

Your last two sentences are royally ****ing stupid, lefthook. No offense.

lol & Hector Macho Camacho would be up there lmfao.

    but yeah,
Like I said, it IS about wins... I said that before!

But you said you feel Cotto has actually fought better competition also.
    I'm just questioning that :).

Vargas did fight the better competition.
    He just didn't beat 'em!

I still would've loved to have seen a prime, less-fat Vargas vs. Mayorga.
I already made this topic a long time ago. I swing either way. But Mayorga gets alotta love here... maybe too much?
