I always enjoy watching cotto fight I respect Taylor as a fighter and he seems from his public persona to be a nice enough guy.....but as a die hard hopkins fan, I cant help but hate that son of a *****!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I too am a fan of Hopkins and recently rewatched the Hopkins-Taylor 1 fight a few weeks ago and thought Hops got robbed in that fight. The rematch could've gone either way in my opinion.
Kasim Ouma and Cory Spinks? Weren't those visibly undersized opponents and don't you remember Taylor's awful performance vs Spinks? And do you consider Lacy to be one of the "best", especially at the time Jermain fought him? Every fighter gets a "pass" or a tune-up fight every now and then. And remember Cotto always dominated vs lesser opponents, Taylor was typically lackluster vs lesser opposition. Both Cotto and Taylor are two of my personal favs, just think of what I just posted and tell me if I'm wrong.
I some what agree. Even if Pac was not on Peds I think poople dont realize cotto had to work hard to make 147 so for him to make 145 he had to have lost 2lb of muscle, effectivley taking away his big advantage in strength and lowering his punch resistance.
Good post, and a lot of good points in the thread. I see the comparison, and I agree. I'm a fan of both of these guys really (I'm a newer fan of Taylor tho... Post-Pavlik fight). I do think that Taylor has had the tougher competition recently tho, but otherwise some very good similarities. Out to both guys for fighting the best of the best tho. I hope both guys can make a comeback, Taylor especially. He looked absolutely heartbroken in the last Fight Camp when he was talking about dropping out of the Super6.
Cottos definitely more dureable though. Taylor is completely shot and needs to stop boxing. I think Cottos fighting style is also a bit more open and in your face, but hes definitely not taken too many soft touches in his career. Good solid underated champ in my opinion. Taylor in my opinion is a little overated.
I view Cotto as someone who is an all around boxer. He tried his best in every department, and had a rock solid foundation. He also was disciplined during training, and in a fight. This is what made Cotto so successful. Zab Judah once said "that he has good fundamentals, but no special shots", or something close to that. Judah may have been passed his prime when he fought Cotto, but not by much. It was more like Cotto's signature body shots and discipline that destroyed Judah. If Hatton was willing to fight Cotto when they were suppose to long ago, and Cotto was favored to win, then we would be looking at Cotto differently.
Not a new comparison for me, but can't say it's still not interesting. I admire both guys a lot and hope everything goes well for them.
