Miguel Cotto making excuses was pathetic didn't even wait until after the fight!

In Cotto's defense, he apparently was getting sick backstage following the Mayweather fight. He might not have been in the greatest shape to conduct an interview that night. He also acknowledged that Trout was the winner following their fight, too-at least in its immediate aftermath. He was unquestionably terse that evening following the loss to Trout, but that was kind of understandable given the fact that he had lost at his adopted home venue for the first time in his career.

And, on Saturday, he was quite gracious toward Ali, and chose to stay in the ring and extend congratulations to the victor, in spite of the fact that he did sustain a pretty nasty injury during the course of the contest. Not much in the way of petulance or denial was displayed by Cotto in his final fight.

in terms of belts accumulated (over-rated IMO) and fighters that he fought, sure. but cotto was always in the 'best of the rest' group, while golovkin is the king of MW

Cotto only took one count against Torres, though he was badly wobbled in the 5th. But in between he was bouncing Torres off the mat.

Cotto definitely landed low on several occasions against Corley (who was happy to return the favor), and the stoppage was probably a bit premature. But near the end Cotto was rocking Corley with some hard head shots, too.

I forgot to record fight and have t seen it yet, so I don’t know how he looked prior to injury.

But it seems like a legit injury if he tore his bicep.

I’m not huge fan nor hater of Cotto, but he doesn’t seem like the guy to make excuses because he’s a sore loser. He’s lost before and faced the music.

King of the dump, one of the worst middleweight eras of all-time. Cotto can beat the tar out of C class competition like Daniel Geale, too, and he's not even a middleweight.

Cotto will be remembered as the greater fighter if Golovkin can't do something remarkable with whatever time he has left.

you can only beat who is available. golovkin was the best in his division, something cotto never was in his entire career!
do you think cotto will be remembered as "the greater fighter" over roy jones and Bernard Hopkins at LHW and MW respectively, just because they also ruled in weak divisions?

That's fine, and I'm typically among the first in the room to point out that Cotto never truly ruled a division. However, the value of Golovkin's divisional rule is somewhat undermined by the poor era he's competed in. Cotto's path has been one of much greater resistance and his body of winning work is much more substantial. His skills have kept him competitive across multiple weight classes, and he's shown the depth and fortitude to bounce back from the inevitable setbacks that come with repeatedly engaging with high level competition. He will be remembered with greater regard than Golovkin, unless Golovkin is able to achieve some significant feats with his remaining time in the sport.

Jones and Hopkins also beat much better guys than Golovkin has over the course of their careers. They didn't just rule over stagnant divisions and nothing else. Hopkins was competing with lineal champions while pushing 50.

I honestly don't think this was an issue, I never felt that if he didnt get hurt he would have won. it happened legally in the fight. Ali won fair and square and I dont think Cotto was taken that away and a few people care.

    Good for Ali.

I hear where you're coming from, I really do
stoic, resilient and warrior are all words to describe cotto and his career. but I just can't look past the fact that he was always a second tier fighter
we'll have to agree to disagree ;)
