That made Gatti a paper champ, none the less, he was still a titleholder when Floyd beat him. Once again, a paper champ is someone who wins a title without beating the champion.
Mayweather's an awesome boxer but it's true keeping his fighting record perfect is more important to him than putting himself to test, against dangerous competition....
From fightnews... Cotto tells Mayweather to 'stop making excuses!' Miguel Cotto doesn't normally call out opponents, but the unbeaten WBA welterweight champion issued a direct challenge to WBC titleholder Floyd Mayweather earlier this week. "I have no problem facing the other champions from the same division," stated Cotto, "but they want to remain as champions. I am open to facing any opponent. When [Mayweather] wants and decides to fight, he knows that Miguel Cotto is here....stop making excuses."
if you're going to call Cotto a paper Champion, then stick to your guns and call Floyd one as well, you can't pick and choose...beating a paper champion, makes you a paper champion...Floyd is no exception.. Cotto's leftovers were more of a threat than Gatti was and Cotto is not PFP#1 like Floyd..looking carefull you'll see the the people Cotto beat later became Champions themselves. A couple of counter points. First, I made a clear cut definition of a paper champ; someone who wins their title without beating the champion. Never have I deviated from that definition. Second, you're venturing into an argument that I never even made by bringing up past opponents. Third, you're forgetting to mention that Corrales, Castillo, and Jesus Chavez all went on to become legitimate champs after Floyd beat them. Meanwhile, Maussa was a one hit wonder who's back to bum status. While Mosely is still active, so is Hoya so I don't see what your point is there. Lovemore was the ultimate paper champ who didn't even beat anyone to get his title. Torres is another paper champ, but still a solid fighter. Paulie and Los are solid fighters as well.
