Well he'll certainly be better off with Manny than he was with Santiago I dunno though, Manny is usually good for making fighters "fight tall" and use their physical attributes but Cotto will be the smaller fight against Foreman. If anything, Foreman is the typical Steward fighter. However, Manny does sort fighters out technically, if there's anything wrong with Cotto's stance or the way he throws certain punches then it'll be fixed. I think the main benefit will be in the corner on fight night. Stewards won't be just a cheerleader in the corner but will give him the right advice.
Potentially good move by Cotto. Cotto is very stubborn and headstrong. He likes to run things his way, so he always appears to be surrounded by yes men. He needs a big presence to guide him, both in training and in the corner. Manny has presence, he will demand Miguel's respect and he won't shy away from telling Miguel straight. I hope it works as I really like Cotto, but I do fear that it might be a bit too late for him.
i remember roach giggling about santiago's experience....much like his mouth watered when oscar got hydrated before the fight and he saw the track marks and explained to manny that this will be a factor go kill.
People **** on Buddy after that pastaferian put him under the bus, but he's a very good guy who cares for his fighters in my book. Really an excellent trainer and actually foresaw Paulie getting walked and stalked down like Cotto and eventually Rick. I remember talking about his concern on Paulie's discipline/lack to keep angles but circle drifts into the cross hairs; something a pillow puncher can't do unless you can squat on the toilet for 36 mins a la Pea. Buddy showed his worth by making Tarver way more competitive in Dawson II after Tarver's people begged Buddy back.
yup, buddy is a good coach, freddie roach, manny steward, nazim richardson, John David Jackson and Ronnie Shields at one time or another have said Buddy is a great coach, other fighters also said the same. the thing is the fights where buddy's fighters got beat up no other trainer could have saved them, i mean whos gonna train gatti to beat mayweather? or rahman to beat wlad? Mcgirt made a mistake with paulie though, he tried to teach him some infighting but each time paulie tried he hurt his hands throwing uppercuts. but all in all i like mcgirts methods, he gets his fighters fit and ready.
cotto boxed brilliantly against pacquiao for the first couple of rounds and i think manny could only promote more of that, I would like to see cotto get in and out instead of pausing to "take a picture" after he lands shots. Cotto can box, he showed it earlier in his career and we still see it in flashes. I think he deserves a tune up to be honest though.
I love Cotto's style but its painfully obvious he needs to change it. He's too brave for his own good. I cant wait to see how Steward tinkers with Cotto's fight game. A more patient,safety first Cotto can still compete at the very top IMO.
It's a good move by Cotto, but i honestly think it's a bit too late in his career. If he'd got Steward in, maybe 5 fights earlier, then i think that would have made a big difference. I just think Cotto has been in too many wars and taken a lot of punishment recently. If his heart is still in it and Steward can get the best out of him then it could well be an exiting partnership. Only time will tell though............

I'd love Manny to teach Cotto how to fight scared and that clinches are part of the game. Cotto is too much of a warrior for his own good at times, with his boxing ability he could take less punishment by having a bit more of a safety first approach. Some people call Cotto flat footed, but for me that's the one aspect of his technical game that I admire is his ability to keep the heels off the canvas even fighting backward. I know it's not as pretty and butterfly'esque like Chad Dawson, but Cotto definitely has very good skills. his feet do slow down at times causing him to square up and this where maybe Steward comes in because overall his footwork is worthy of an instructional dvd for young fighters imo. Just needs a bit more ring smarts and tricks of the trade. I do think it maybe too late to instill those types of instincts though without changing his whole makeup.
Cotto's been plodding since he fought Margarito though - I think there was significant damage done in that fight, as in life-changing. I was watching him against Quintana and, while he's slow-footed there, his command of distance and his position was a lot better. Since he lost to Margo, he can't seem to keep his form. Against Paquaio he just came apart in the second and fourth rounds. Squaring up, trading with a faster guy while at his optimal range... sloppy for such an educated technician.
