Miguel Cotto vs. Kostya Tszyu

The question was Prime vs Prime.....and 140 was not Cottos prime.....Cotto has yet to reach his prime

 

So kid, what you are sayinh is we should measure a Cotto that we have not yet seen against a Tzsyu who never fought at Cotto's best weight?

How about taking the best 140 Cotto and the best 140 Tzsyu?

 

Well at Cotto's best at 140, he would have been KO'd by Tszyu at his best at the weight.

If Tszyu had fought Cotto when he fought Hatton, he would have KO'd Cotto at that point as well.

 

Surely KT could move up ONE division though... I think thats much more fair then forcing this hypothetical match up against a still green version of Cotto.

 

He was not green at all. He was weight drained.

You say that like it's a fact, but its something that will have to be judged retrospectively - we don't know what Cotto will do in future, we can only go on the best we have seen from him to date.

Tszyu beats the **** out of Cotto at 140...easy

 

Let's not judge Tszyu by his last fight ever ... that's like judging sugar ray and ali by some of their last fights. So many champions have had one fight too many and i think Tszyu did as well. If he'd stopped after the Mitchell rematch, this poll wouldn't have so many people picking Cotto.

My honest opinion is this fight wouldn't have been close ... Cotto is certainly a come forward fighter but he does pause before attacking and gives opponents time to set and throw. He also eats alot of punches to land his own. This is death in front of Tszyu.

Another thing is ... can anyone name a time Tszyu has been visibly hurt to the body in his entire career? He was remarkedly resiliant to body shots and had a damn good chin.

I've seen Cotto rocked in numerous fights and he was lucky his opponents weren't finishers. He has limited head movement and isn't fast and although powerful, he goes backwards when he gets hit by good punches. A prime Tszyu, one of the best finishers at 140 ever, takes him out in the middle rounds easier than most people expect.

 

Gee so you are implying that the Cotto at 140 is as tested and experienced as the same cotto at 147 then.... ROFL. Back to the drawing board champ.

 

I think we need to see more of Cotto before this hypothetical can properly be made. Kt could easily move up one division and still be a beast. Both of these guys styles spell trouble for each other, which would make for a very interesting fight. Both under rated technical fighters, both with good power, KT slightly more upstairs, Cotto more to the body. Cotto with the better jab and hook, KT with the better right hand. I feel that KT would definitely find a home for his right hand against Cotto, which on Cotto's shakey chin could certainly spell goodnight. Cotto would really need to get inside, and pummell KT from the inside where he can't get leverage on his punches. This would be a battle of who could force the other guy to fight their fight. Very tough match to call. At this stage, even at 147, KT KO 7-8 IMO. However the jury is still out on Cotto. IF he could prove himself against some top level punchers, i would be inclinded to change my pick.
