Cotto by decision. Cuevas put together a string of title defenses against fairly respectable opponents, but nobody that I would call truly 'elite'. It's a well-known fact that Cuevas had crushing two-handed power and some might say that would be enough to KO Cotto. But given some of the awesome boxing displays put on by Cotto - he's had magnificent rounds against Margarito, Mosley, Judah, put a vicious beating on Malignaggi, and handed notoriously tough Clottey only his second loss after a hard-fought battle. I think in this match-up Cotto would respect Cuevas' power enough to abandon his stalking tactics and box on the outside with combinations and footwork the same way he did for the first 8 rounds against Margarito until the concrete caught up with him.
Cuevas by brutal stoppage. That guy could punch like a ****ing mule and Cotto is hittable and hurtable.
I figured anyone that picked Cuevas would be by KO given Cotto being wobbled and hurt several times by less-than-reputable punchers. I suppose it's just a question of whether or not someone feels Cotto can outbox him without getting tagged and stopped. Credit to Cotto, though. He's been hurt, but never on the verge of being KOd. Even in taking those knees against Margo.
I think Cotto has real solid boxing skills, but I don't think he would be able to stay clear of Cuevas who just hit too hard for him in my estimation. Youre right tho...Cotto's one of the tougher fighters in the sport and hes tough to knock down from a single punch. To stop him you have to beat everything out of him :good
I give Cotto hardly any chance in this bout at all. To be completely honest, I think it's pretty absurd to favor him unless: A) You're a die hard Cotto fan, B) You don't know a lick about Cuevas, or C) You aren't the sharpest knife in the drawer when it comes to analyzing fights. Cotto is far too hittable and robotic to last even 6 rounds with Cuevas, who beat a much more fluid and probably more skilled boxer-puncher in Angel Espada 3 times by stoppage. I would give away my house if Cotto lasted the distance, much less won.
i was a great fan of pipino cuevas but i think in this fight cotto has better boxing skills. that's not to say i wouldn't give cuevas a punchers chance because he did have a high ko pct. rate. i think though, cotto is stronger and much more rounded as a boxer and would probably decision cuevas in a great fight.
Cuevas by KO he isthe bigger punch and Cotto when he faces a brawler forgets to box. However, in the given case that Cotto decides to box him Cuevas could ko him as late as the 12th round. The interesting thing is if the fight goes 15 rounds could Cotto last all 15.
Pretty much everyone Cuevas KO'd was a more well rounded boxer, that didn't help any of them, including a superior technician to Cotto in Espada. I also completely disagree that Cotto is stronger. Cotto has never appeared physically strong at 147 to me, at least not against top flight opposition. Sure, he has better technical skills, but the one area he's lacking, defense, is the one area that is going to hurt him. Cuevas was capable of taking anything Cotto dished out. The same can't be said of Cotto for Cuevas, and trust me, he would be getting hit a lot.
