I’m not a big Cotto fan but he was skilled, fought everyone, and always came to fight, but I think he’d always be a B+ fighter no matter who trained him.

Yeah Cotto's problem was that because of his ear muff defense he sometimes didnt see punches coming, especially uppercuts. Also his reach made it so that he had to risk getting into the pocket against higher skilled fighters to get his punches off. His reach also let him down when he was trying to box from the outside. Lastly, he didnt take punishment well. Excellent career all things considering.

Cotto's career can be thought of as pre-Margarito and post-Margarito.

Roach was the best thing that ever happened to Cotto during his post-Margarito career.

The Cuban trainer (Pedro Diaz) that had Cotto for Mayweather and Trout was a disaster. He had zero idea how to maximize Cotto's strengths so instead he tried to completely rebuild him. What a wasted couple of years in that career.

Had Roach been there in 2012 then Mayweather would have had to fight a much, much better version of Cotto. Cotto would have easily decisioned Trout and have fought a much greener version of Canelo in 2013.

Cotto seemed to have his left hook negated and his punches lacked authority because of the size difference. It reminded me a little of the Clottey fight, in that regard. Cotto fought well given the deficits he had, but I thought Alvarez won handily.

I think too much is made about trainers, too. Cotto knew how to fight, regardless of who was instructing him. I don't think he ever beats Trout (bad styles matchup against a bigger guy), Canelo (unless he gets him real early), etc. Miguel was a rock solid operator, but never truly elite. His resume is bloated by his association with Top Rank, who was able to hand him gifts others could not have, e.g. trinket bouts with Jennings, Kamegai, etc.

I'd upgrade him to A-, but I agree with everything else. To me Cotto was a monster because of Cotto, don't think trainers made too much of a difference.

You would easily lose in a debate.

    Canelo landed 155
    Cotto landed 129
    Canelo wins EFFECTIVE AGGRESSION

    Canelo landed 32%
    Cotto landed 21%
    Canelo wins DEFENSE

Cotto also did not sit on his punches as he was very defensive minded against Canelo, opposite to his fights with Mayweather, Pacquiao, and Martinez, andhe was light on his feet. Most of Cotto's punches were arm punches, where as Canelo was throwing with intention.

Not only did Canelo outland Cotto, but he outlanded him in the power punches department. Cotto landed only 17 more pitty pat jabs than Canelo, while Canelo landed 43 power punches more.
    Canelo wins CLEAN PUNCHING

If you watched this fight and legitimately think Cotto deserved to win just give up on the sport what's the point in watching something you understand that little.

With that being said Cotto is underrated on this board where we have legions of ggg and Loma fans calling them all time greats with far less on their resumes but Cotto seems to get consistently trashed
